Hi everyone 🙂
My name is Demi, I am 18 years old and currently on Study Vacation before commencing my HSC Examinations. I love reading in my free time, and spending time with friends; usually on an unusual adventure such as going on bushwalking or getting up at 4:30am to watch the sunrise.
If you asked me six months ago what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer would constantly change. It varied from artist, to photographer, to teacher, journalist; even author. But, recently I experienced a series of events that allowed me to recognise my strength is listening/ supporting others. Due to this I have decided to strive for a ridiculously high ATAR and hopefully study Psychology at University next year. The events leading to this decision, although confronting and traumatic, have allowed me to adapt my lifestyle and mindset into one that is purely positive. I am lucky, that with medication and the constant support from my psychologist/GP and friends that I can reflect upon what happened and seek out the positives. It is difficult at times but being able to do that has kept me going through the challenging days.
I hope that through this chatroom I am able to help others reflect on their own experiences and develop a mindset that will give them comfort when times are tough, and everything around them seems negative. I hope that I can help you find light in the darkness, and provide you with the support you deserve.
I know we've never met but I am so thankful for all of you, taking the step to sign up and create an amazing support network for everyone here/ every future member in BB 🙂
It was nice to meet you guys.
Demi
P.S more than happy to talk about my experiences in detail- just wanted to keep this introduction short and sweet 🙂

Hi Demi,
A very warm welcome 😊
Wow, what a moving post. It's beautiful (but still admittedly very sad) when something amazing emerges from one's traumatic experiences. Maybe it's our human way of making sense of our pain.
I'm glad you seem to have a good support system around you. You don't have to go it alone. And feeling less alone can be a huge part of the healing (or whatever) process.
Kudos to you for recognising the quiet power of listening and supporting. You know, sometimes an ear is all we need. It's not always about saying the "right" things but it's about simply being there so you're onto something, Demi.😉
All the best with your HSC! That's right, aim high sister!
I'm 20 years old and I study B.Commerce/B.Psych(hon) so we have the psych interest thing in common. That, and I also LOVE spending time with my friends.
Dottie x

Hi Demi
A huge Welcome and thankyou for a very well articulated post too! I'm Paul and good to meet you.
Like yourself I have a supportive psychologist/GP too after being in the private sector. You are a pro-active and intelligent person who has a high level of 'self care' which will bring a higher level of peace in your life through any difficult periods.
If I can say thankyou big time for your super kind compliments and thoughts about the forums 🙂
If you have a look under the header of 'Young People' there is a great thread called;
"Fellow psych students on the forum?"
You have some very special qualities that will benefit many people/posters on the forums Demi. Whether you are in the thread above re Psychology students or here, you are more than welcome to post as many times as you wish on any subject here too.
You are a breath of fresh air. Looking forward to reading your posts when you choose to do so of course
My kind thoughts for you
Paul

Hi Paul, it is lovely to meet you 🙂
I just want to say I find the work and commitment you have to the site truly inspirational, and I hope with time I can contribute to this amazing forum/outlet for others experiencing similarly challenging, yet developing events in their lives. I am so glad to hear you are also receiving helpful support, it really does make a difference hey! I hope that with encouragement and support everyone here can receive the same, unwavering support I have had the privilege to 🙂
It has taken a long time for me to develop this mindset and is often a struggle to maintain but I hope that through these discussion groups that I am able to contribute in a way that will help someone reach a humble/ positive mindset also.
As for the Fellow Psych Student Forum, I am still completing my HSC, would it be a problem for me to participate despite this?
Thank you so much for taking the time to welcome me, it's been a please meeting you Paul 🙂

Hi Demi
That thread about psychology students is a general term for the thread. You would be welcomed big time in there even if you are studying HSC and contemplating psychology as a course at uni.
You would be a benefit to the thread.....if you wish to post of course. I am sure Dottie is in there too...she is a legend and will roll out the welcome mat for you 🙂
You can post here too....As a person with depression that has recovered from the bulk of his anxiety you would be a gift here or anywhere you choose to post
Thankyou for being on the forums, If there were no new posters like yourself, the forums would cease to exist

I am extremely lucky to have the amazing support system I do, and hope through these forums I can show others the same love, care and support others have shown me. Thank you so much for wishing me luck, I hope I make it and someday soon can be as knowledgable as yourself 🙂
Looking forward to getting to know you more,
Demi

Hello again,
Sounds like an amazing opportunity! I will definitely join and hopefully provide some helpful advice, but even if not, I'm sure the knowledge I will gain from reflecting on the things you, Dotti and the others post will be a great encouragement to me.
I am also considering applying for Community Campion but am worried I am too inexperienced (as I only joined the online forum tonight) what are your thoughts?
Cheers,
Demi

Hi demi and welcome to the forum. My name is Steph or MsPurple (not gonna lie it was meant to be MissPurple I thought we weren't allowed to use names including first oops that was a double fail on my part). I'm 25 and I finished my nutrition and dietetic degree last year. I had to do a psychology subject and I loved it. I want to help clients with mental health and nutritional issues. I think psychologist and social workers are amazing people and have to have so much strength to do what they do. I am glad you are here to help us combat the stigma against mental illness. I suffered hard from GAD and depression at Uni and I wish at the time I could have been more open about it so I could have gotten help sooner. I now know better and am hoping I can help others with their struggles
glad to meet you and I'm sure I'll see you on the forums heaps 🙂
