Hi, I’m new!

Hi there, I’m new to this so forgive me if I do this wrong. I’m “pheobe” and was diagnosed with GA and depression about 12yrs ago and have on meds since which took a while but ultimately saved me. Over the years I’ve had small downs but nothing major till now. Had a major episode a month ago for 5 days and this one 6 days ago. Have now increased meds slightly to see if it helps. Which of course comes with side affects and the doubt and worry it won’t work and things will get worse. So I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t. Ive had to take today off to give my body time to adjust as I knew there was a potential to burst into unstoppable tears in front of my coworkers which would be devastating and even more distressing. Thankfully I’ve only had tears once today and in the comfort of my home. But I can’t stay home forever.

I’ve been reading a lot about natural treatments for depression and find it overwhelming. I know nothing is immediate but if anyone knows of any techniques that can help reduce my symptoms I’d be very grateful.

Thanks. Pheobe

Dear Phoebe,

Welcome to Beyond Blue, and well done for reaching out.

I too have had anxiety and depression, plus PTSD on and off for most of my life. These days I am dong much better, but it certainly has not been without LOTS of help and intervention.

I find there are a couple helpful things that get me through:

1) Regular exercise, and healthy eating. I know it sounds cliche, but it's true. The more often I engage in physical activity, and the better I eat, then the better I feel.

2) Music! "Dance like nobody is watching" around your loungeroom to the music that gets your heart pumping, and your face smiling!

3) Meditation and relaxation. I have done yoga many times and found it to be really beneficial. Helps to relax both the mind and body. Perhaps you too could give it a go, yeah?

4) Beyond Blue! Because that's exactly what we are here for. You can come here as often as you like, for as much support and engaging with others in the same boat, as you like.

Anyway, I hope that helps a little? I don't really know what else to suggest. I am certainly no professional, that's for sure. Just a fellow human, with some similar issues and experiences to yourself.

Take care. I'll be thinking of you. xo

Hi Soberlicious96

Thanks for the tips, I hope that helps you Phoebe. I'm new here (first post) Mum to 20yr old who suffers depression, he has days where he can't leave his room & feels sad as he has no purpose in life (his words) he is unemployed & living in a share house with 3 other young adults, no drugs, good kids. As a Mum I want to know how to help him, I'm here to get tips and have heard that exercise can help, I'm curious about the meditation and was also thinking about a reiki session ?

Take care
