Hi I'm new.... Anxiety, nervousness

Hi all,

I've only just joined today... Umm... I'm in my 50's and it started I suppose back in 2014, started what is called a Hyptic Jerk whilst trying to get to sleep... I was and had been going through some health issues, but this Night Jerk lasted all night and in the next.. Long story cut short... Had a Sleep check done... found my poor mind was waking every 58 sec through the night. So... after all that time I have been on Depression and Anxiety medication.. it was working and although my sleep was not great the night jolts and jerks dropped off.. not all but better...

If I could only stop the night jerks and jolts I'm sure my anxiety would go... but it's feeds on the sleep problems..

I stopped my meds last year, thinking that all was good.. I lasted until Xmas 2016 and the feeling of nervousness and anxiety returned.. So.. I started back on the meds... still early days and still feeling very jumpy and jittery.. and the night jerks continue...

Thanks for listening all.. I do hope you all get well.

Cheers.

hi Ktmman, people stop taking their med's because genuinely they feel so much better, which is exactly what they want, however the catch is this has happened only because of the medication and once they stop they could quite easily fall back to where they were, so the process has to start again.
Maybe seeing your GP to see if they can give you sleeping tablets. Geoff.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the reply and information... Yes I been seeing my GP and specialist since 2014, I am on a medication which helps with my sleep... A lot of my anxiety and sleep problems are also compounded by the worry of being depended on medication.. a never ended circle.

I am hoping that going back on my meds will bring me back to where I was... it's only been 5 days since starting them, and I know it can take from 2 - 8 weeks before things settle down..

thanks again... Love to be able to speak to someone about this... it's a massive relief.

Cheers.

Hello Again,

Wondering where I can post on the Forum on how I feel ? Feeling down today.. At work, but have no energy, feeling sad...

Is there somewhere I can just post that to get some feed back? Feel alone.

Cheers.

Hi ktmman,

There is a section called anxiety on the main boards (this section is called welcome and orientation), but if you like, you can just reply here as well. That might be easier.

What is troubling you at the moment?

Hi James,

Thank you.... I've been battling my sleep disorder since 2014 when the Hypnic Jerks started... There are a lot or people way worse then me... however (stuck for words here) umm... I went off the medication in Sep 2016 and have now gone back on it...

I know the med can take many weeks to work... it's just today after another poor night of sleep, I feel really down.. I also find people just don't understand or care..

I have a great wife and family but... just feel like this will never end and the night jerks and jolts will never stop..

Thanks for listening... I think it helps..

Cheers.

Hello Ktmman

Hello and welcome. As James has said, you can start another thread under a different section of the forum, or stay with this thread. In some ways I think you will be better starting a new thread as people do not often look at the Welcome and Orientation forum. You are also more likely to find people with similar problems as you in different forums, which makes it easier to discuss.

Have a look at the other forums and see where you think you will fit in best. Then simply start a new thread. Look at Anxiety, Depression, Staying Well, Treatments, Health Professionals and Therapies. Read the posts and see where you think is the best place to fit.

Also have a look through the information available on BB. Start by looking at the information under The Facts at the top of the page.

Please continue to talk to us wherever you decide to keep your thread.

Hi Mary,

I searched for Hypnic Jerks to do with sleep... if you search yourself, you will only find my thread... I feel so alone with this problem..

I cannot just have a nap or sleep without this problem occurring..

I have seen the doctors, specialist, had MRI's Other Brain Scans for epilepsy, and all came back fine.. but after 3 plus years i am worn out..

Thanks for listening...

I had a quick search via Mr Google for Hypnic Jerks and found they are a common phenomenon.Apparently about 70% of people have this experience on occasions. While there is no definite cause it is suggested that you reduce your caffeine if it is high, also strenuous evening exercise. Emotional stress or sleep deprivation can increase the frequency and intensity of this event. Relaxation techniques can be helpful.

If it's any comfort, now that I understand what hypnic jerks are, I can tell you I have them fairly often. Usually only one or two as I drift off to sleep. I also have sleep apnoea and I wonder how much this contributes to this disagreeable effect.

Has your doctor referred you to a sleep disorder specialist? It may be very helpful. I know you feel you have been tested to death and it's very wearing for you, but talking to someone who knows about these may be helpful. I see a respiratory specialist if that's any help.

Writing about your experiences can be very helpful. Keeping a journal may be useful, even if only as a record of what is happening, when, how often etc. Also talking here helps many folk.

hi Ktmman, I have just come from my doctor and as I said that even after 10 hours of sleep I sometimes still feel tired, so he has suggested having a'sleep apnoea' test which costs about $140 where you go somewhere and they test you for how you are sleeping and what can be fixed, so ask your doctor. Geoff.
