Depression/Anxiety and alcohol.

Hello.

I have been living with depression/anxiety for 15 years now.

We all know the symptoms and challenges that come with living with these diseases.

I would like to know if anybody else is impacted by having a couple of beers.

I have now got to a point where i can have 2 or 3 light beers and for the next 3 or 4 days i feel like crap.

Depressed, crying and really unbalanced by the simple pleasure of drinking a couple of beers.

Its not the medication as i stopped taking them a year ago after 14 years.

Would love to hear from anyone else that may be affected.

Dear Parky001~

Welcome here to the Forum. Its a frustrating thing but not that uncommon, in fact it has been called "hangxiety".

Rather than repeat what has already been said better can I refer you to Chris B's explanation at:

Forums / Anxiety / Anxiety after night out drinking?

I realize you are not on meds, and that different people will have different tolerances however I think you will find the post applies and makes sense.

Please let us know what you think

Hi Parky, thanks for posting your comment.

Alcohol can temporarily reduce inhibitions and although it has made you feel worse is because your blood alcohol drops soon after you stop drinking, so you're still going through a 'hang-over' period, nothing like what you would if you drank heavily all night, but your body still has to get rid of the alcohol.

It still makes you feel lousy and can make you cry, especially when you aren't feeling well, it could be that set off point that lowers you even further making you feel worse.

It might be something minor when you're drinking, but will be magnified the day after, so alcohol numbs it, but certainly not as you are drying out and this is when you cry, but you're not alone here, this has happened to me many times when I was self-medicating in depression.

It used to be when we were going out or we had to come home and I was the driver and had a couple of drinks but had to stay under 0.05, but couldn't show the tears to anybody and once again had to pretend nothing was wrong.

Please get back to us if you want to continue.

Best wishes.

Geoff.
