Before starting a new thread...have you tried the search function?

Hey everyone,

It's quite common for new members to land here in the forums and start new threads on topics that have been discussed many times already.

On the one hand, this is great news, as it means you're not alone!

On the other hand, it means we get a lot of members reinventing the wheel and starting individual threads when they could be connecting with and providing support for each other.

Typing a query into the search box will usually bring up a whole host of results from our forums. Have a look at the example below using the search term "health anxiety", which is a very common discussion topic for newbies - 284 results!

health-anxiety

The more we contribute to existing conversations, the bigger the collective resource we build on that topic.

Next time you're going to start a new thread, have a quick search first to see if anyone else has started a similar topic already - you may save yourself a lot of work, and make some new online friends at the same time.

The search box can be found at the top-right of the screen if you're on a desktop machine, and if you're on mobile look for the magnifying glass symbol:

Hi Chris

Thanks for the tip. I'm having trouble finding a page that says "search". Could you please give me some direction?

Hi Lemon Tree. I dont think Chris is available to help you tonight, so I will try to assist you in his absence.

You will find the Search function at the very top right hand corner of your screen. It is a pale grey in colour and has a picture of a little magnifying glass at the right side of it in a dark blue.

Once you see it, type in whatever it is that you are looking for. Or reply to me here and perhaps I can help.

Hi Lemon Tree,

Are you using a phone or a computer? they are slightly different.

On the phone search should be the magnifying glass on the right side of the blue bit next to the house.

On the computer search is right up the top on the right.

That is how I do it anyway. But don't stress too much, it is more important to have the conversation and be heard, if you want to tell your own story or ask a question about your story that you haven't posted before, you can't go too wrong by posting it.

So Welcome to the forums and I hope to see more of your posts as time goes on.

Rob.

Another quick search tip: sometimes Google will bring up different results to our own search box, which you might want to try. Put "beyondblue forums" onto the end of your Google search term, for example:

"health anxiety beyondblue forums"

healthy anxiety google

Oh my gosh! I never saw that search thing on the top right!

I am such a bad millenial when it comes to the internet sometimes, aha.

I can't believe I've been in the forums for so long and never noticed that! I've always used
Google instead 🙂

Can I make a suggestion that you make the button a little bit bigger/more obvious?

I didn't notice it either!

A question for the forum however - can you also search for a person? Being a relative newcomer, there are obvious stories behind some of the regular posters. I do not feel comfortable in asking them to retell their story, but would like to understand better where they are coming from. We all let out a little here and a little there, but sometimes it's difficult getting the full picture.

Suggestions?
