Ultra breif pulse ECT

Hi all,

I have been reading allot on ECT therapy, and there is so many mixed reviews, memory problens from mild to servere, not working, worsening symptoms etc.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with ultra breif pulse ECT. If so effectivness, time in hospital, cost anything really.

I have been struggling with depression for over 15 years, i have tried countless medications, therapy etc and nothing works.

I think about suicide daily, because the pain is unbearable although if i could just find something maybe ill be ok. I don't want to die, but at the same time I'm exhausted with living this way.

Hi cocorosie, welcome to the Beyond Blue forums.

ECT is one therapy that I hadn't tried, but I can completely relate to your last paragraph.

I wonder if you have had a chat with a psychiatrist about short pulse ECT and what their first hand experience has been with their patients.

I've found multiple approaches worked well for me. Medications, psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a bit of exercise, learning my triggers and avoiding my triggers! A good diet with good quality foods and someone to talk to, like us here on the board.

It's been 15 or 20 years for me too and lots of ups and downs. The more I learnt about triggers and the feeling of depression coming on the more I knew to avoid the trigger. It took me a while.

I read a really good book by a Dr in Melbourne. "The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris. I found it really down to earth and very helpful in easing the symptoms of how I was feeling. I still kept seeing my psychiatrist and taking my medication, but the book helped glue a few things together for me.

Perhaps the first step might be to talk to a psychiatrist or specialist who performs SB ECT and grab some first hand answers.

What are your thoughts?
