Hi all,
I am currently in the early stages of diagnoses for anxiety and depression. This is all very new and extremely daunting having hidden from medical intervention forseveral years.
My doctor in the first appointment started talking about prescribing me an antidepressant. Is this standard? I would have thought the gp would at least wait until after a few sessions with the psychologist.
I appreciate any input or ideas, I just feel I have no one to really ask about it.

Hi Mystery Belle. I was diagnosed with major depressive/anxiety disorder in 1995 when I was in my mid-30s. I had experienced both disorders since childhood and had put off seeking help for years because of the stigma attached to mental health issues and also because I was in denial that my issues were serious.
It reached the point where I really had no choice as I could barely function. I spoke to my GP about how badly I was feeling and that I wanted to be referred to a mental healthcare professional. He arranged for me to see a psychiatrist, however, I had to wait 2 weeks to see him. My GP suggested starting an antidepressant prior to an assessment by the psychiatrist. I understood the reason for this was that I had 2 weeks to wait before seeing the psychiatrist; I was very depressed; he was concerned about my welfare; and his opinion was the sooner I started an antidepressant medication the sooner I would have a little more control over my emotional state.
Antidepressants typically can take up to 6 weeks before there is any noticeable effect. I have spoken to others and it seems that it is quite common for GPs to prescribe antidepressant medication prior to referral when a patient presents with a serious depression. I was very fortunate in that the medication began to "kick in" within a few weeks. When I did see the psychiatrist my mood had very slightly improved and so the treatment process began to take effect sooner.
Initially I found the whole process of seeking help very daunting and, at times, overwhelming -this too is very common. However, after a few months it did get easier and I'm pretty sure it will for you too. Good luck and best wishes for your recovery.

dear Mystery Belle, hello and I'm so sorry that you have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, but yes it's very common for your doctor to want to immediately put you on antidepressants (AD), because when you see your psychologist he/she will naturally ask you if you are on any AD.
As Ladyhawke said you maybe lucky for this medication to kick in almost straight away. Geoff.

Hi Mystery Belle,
I have had a similar experience. It was explained to me that the therapy will take a while to work and changing thought processes is a slow process so the medication helps in the interim until the other head stuff can then take over.
It's great you are getting treatment and I agree it's very daunting. I have just been referred to see a psych again and it's very confronting to be forced to talk about what you've avoided for so long. It's not easy but my advice is to be honest and open and just go along with it until eventually you'll feel better for it.
Good luck
Astara

Hi Antidepressant prescriptions are quite standard, for some people they are very effective.
The best approach is probably to follow your doctors advice regarding medication, and get some psychological support/therapy going along side!
You will get used to the process quickly and it should start to seem a lot less daunting!
You have made some very positive steps, best wishes.
