Hi,
I loved the session which I have just watched via the recording. The one thing that isn't covered is the joint, body aches, HRT alternatives, specialist doctors in each state.
I noted that it was stated that post menopause symptoms finally settle down ... the truth is it doesn't settle down straight away ... it can be 5+, 10+ years before they settle down and only after they have been addressed as menopause symptoms, not other symptoms (eg hip bursitis; sciatica; weight issues; skin and hair issues; brain fog/dymentia issues) etc.
I would love another session where post menopause is discussed in detail.

Everyone experiences menopause differently, and it's so important to acknowledge that and receive personalised support from health professionals. We will definitely take note of this as another aspect to discuss in the future.

I just watched the video and I wanted to say thank you BB for the webinar. It’s really excellent! I didn’t know Myf had done a TV series on menopause so I will watch that. I wish this info had been available 9 years ago when perimenopause symptoms started for me at 41.
I fall into the category of someone with a complex trauma history whose perimenopausal mental health symptoms were very likely heightened because of that, so I was thinking that could even be another topic for possible future discussion. However, I also know from what I’ve read and listened to that some women develop severe mental health symptoms during perimenopause who had no previous mental health issues. But there might be some interesting areas to explore in how past trauma issues may contribute to struggles in the perimenopause age bracket.
I thought I would share that I’m going through some deep healing of lifelong emotional trauma issues at the moment and this I feel is having a positive impact on my hormonal balance. My perimenopause journey has been extremely rocky in the last 2 and a half years in particular, but as I heal emotionally it’s feeding back into my hormonal and immune systems, and my autonomic function as well (e.g. calming of the fight/flight/freeze response). So I just thought I’d mention that for anyone else out there who has a trauma history.
I like what they were saying too how everything becomes more blunt and clear with the hormonal shifts, where becoming less tolerant has some advantages - like you see things as they really are, speak your mind etc. That can definitely be turned into a positive and I’m thinking how I set much better boundaries for myself now and can no longer tolerate behaviour from others that isn’t kind and respectful. So the process can also be empowering.

I just wanted to share an article I just found. I can’t share it as a link but it’s a journal paper and it’s called Severe Mental Illness and the Perimenopause by Sophie Behrman and Clair Crockett published online by Cambridge University Press. While it’s probably directed at clinicians I thought it may be helpful for anyone else out there struggling with major mental health impacts from perimenopause. It provides a concise summary of relevant issues including how the brain is affected by hormonal changes.
I’ve had a severe collapse again into anxiety on Wednesday and today it’s severe depression. I know it’s hormonal so searching desperately for help at the moment. I’ve restarted hormone medication despite the side effects I had before to try to regain some balance.
The above article to me is very important as current approaches to women’s mental health often do not properly consider perimenopause. Where severe mental health symptoms present, some of the medications used can actually exacerbate mental health symptoms due to perimenopause rather than help them. The whole picture needs to be seen, not one thing treated in an isolated way. I feel it’s so important for anyone impacted by perimenopausal symptoms that impact mental health to have access to this information.
At times I feel I am losing my mind and almost with the symptoms of psychosis, but what I read is the medications that are routinely prescribed for those kinds of symptoms may not be the best first line approach when the underlying cause is hormonal. I have this feeling of just hanging onto my sanity and I’m really hoping the hormone medication will help me. I will try booking again with the hormone specialist doctor I’ve seen previously.
I know how lonely and isolating these experiences of collapsed mental heath in perimenopause can be, so just want to share anything that may help others.
