I have just about given up on the medical system. In the last 3 months I have sacked 2 GPs, 2 psychologists and one state health system. My GP of 4 years would not send my test results to my specialist. I can't help but feel I was not being taken seriously. On 2 occasions, a psychologist gave me an ear bashing for "arriving one hour early" when I was clearly on time. Another psychologist advised he would not be the best fit for me and I needed the services of a pain management clinic. I requested a referral from my second GP who said "that's not for you, they will reject the referral". I recently visited my 3rd GP in 3 months. So far so good, a very kind fellow. Fingers crossed 🤞

Hi, welcome
While I cant comment on specific professionals as I dont know them, in general I can express myself with the wider community.
Psychologists, psychiatrists, professors and so forth including many highly qualified individuals often lack the qualities required to communicate well in addition they are forgetful of completing the most simple of tasks often ones that are standard routine like writing out the referral you went there for or asking about other issues. Clearly they are on another plane of thinking but their abilities lie in their expertise to be able to study hard, understand the jumbling words and formulas that got them qualified. Due the latter, thats what I focus on when seeking their services and half expect they will fail in the basics.
In support of them they see many patients and often forget the details of the patient when they arrive. This can lead to feeling like you are a number. So I make sure they refer to me by my Christian name as that means they remembered me or at least read a few notes before I entered.
But above all else what I seek is to get the very best out of them. If a psychologist is very capable in his field but is hopelessly inadequate in an area like dealing with my inability to keep friends or understand the opposite sex, then I will steer clear of those topics.
The kindness you found in your most recent GP could be the break you need. A kind GP is "gold"

Dear Monarch,
I really empathise in that I’ve struggled greatly to get the help I need over many years. What I have found in my case at least is that perseverance was the answer. From when I first started going to therapy it took me 17 years until I found the really good psychologist I’ve worked with now for the last 2 and a half years. I increasingly realised I had to do a lot of my own research to get a sense of the most helpful therapeutic approaches for me and then seek out a psychologist on the same page in relation to those approaches. I really had to search and only settle for a psychologist who was a good fit. In my first session with her she just really listened to me and I felt safe which set the scene for a very trusting, constructive alliance. I have a complex mix of mental and physical health issues, and it sounds like you do too with chronic pain in the mix. I have found so many GPs struggle to effectively help patients with more complex presentations. I have only ever had one GP in my life I felt truly safe with and seen by and if she wasn’t on extended leave for family matters that’s who I’d still be seeing. So I really hope for you this new GP is one of those good ones. Kindness is everything and is definitely a good sign. You want someone who can be truly present with you. Interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence should be a core part of medical training as when those things are present the outcomes are so much better for the patient and doctor.
All the best,
ER

Hi again
Have you any reply to my post and eagle ray's post? It would be advantageous to us getting to know you.
12 months is near unheard of. I hope you find the care you need.

Thanks for your reply, I started an experimental pain & recovery treatment last week. So far so good. I haven't been pain free for eight months and find I am now having time without any pain at all. I found one treatment that I couldn't afford so I settled on something I have tried before. No pbs on either. I had to have a tele-health consult and wait for the chemist. I am amazed by the difference. It's not something my GP would prescribe & I would not recommend it to anyone as there are risks being an experimental compound. I felt I had to make a decision and take my own action. I just need to get my head right now and hopefully start living.
Cheers, Monarch
