Finally getting help

So I went to the doctor last week and today regarding my issues with mental health. They increased my medication and i asked for a Mental Health Care Plan. Within a month i'll be contacted by a psychologist and will recieve the support i need. I will also have a Psychiatrist evaluation at some point soon to determine whether or not it's necessary to change medications and to evaluate whether im eligible for a pension.

I must admit I was nervous about going to the doctor and cracking the bottle I keep my darkest problems in, And im still nervous about going to the psychologist, But hey, when aren't i nervous?

Apart from the depression, general anxiety and SAD (All classed as severe), The doctor thinks it is evident i also have PTSD regarding an incident (several even) that occured in 2009-2012 (Look up my previous post if you're curious).

I'm just glad I'll soon have all the support i could ask for. What isnt fun however is almost bursting into tears explaining my problems to the doctor.

I've taken some big steps in the past week, and for the first time ever, I'm somewhat proud of myself.

Hi iamanon,

Thanks for sharing your story with us. I hope that your experience will inspire others to seek much needed support. It can be a big sense of relief when you realise that it's possible for things to start looking less gloomy. I hope that you will keep us updated in how you're going with the increased dose of medication, and also how you find the Psychologist.

I think all of us have probably cried in front of our Drs at least at one point. Crying is very cathartic and can relieve a lot of tension and pressure from the body in a physical manner. I don't think our Drs have an issue with us crying...have you noticed they always have tissues on hand?? The tears won't last forever.

Look forward to hearing of your progress.

dear Iamanon, finally going to your doctor can be a stressful time, because we never know how the doctor will react, however depression is now such a common illness that it destroys so much time out of our life, so that's when we need the help that is on offer.

Here I am a man aged 59 who had previously cried pretty well on every visit to my psychologist, as well as to my doctor, so I have no disrespect to anyone who does the same.

I like the way you say 'crack the bottle', because that's virtually what happens, as we are now letting someone in to our darkest secrets, we have to do this to enable them to be able to help us through this bad time in our life.

We can't hide it any longer because it's just like a disease eating away at us, and every corner we go to there is always trouble.

So be proud of yourself for instigating this help, and please be prepared for the ups and downs along the way, as these will occur. Geoff.
