Considering ECT, 22 years old...thoughts?

Hey all,

Ive read a lot about ECT but still curious on everyone's thoughts. I've suffered from depression for years now, I've been on about 9 different antidepressants, talked to 3 different psychologists and have had no results... I'm beyond frustrated and running out of options, it's sad it's had to come to this. If anyone can share anything that'd be great.

hello, and I can much frustration in you desperately wanting to cope with this depression, I don't blame you, because not everyone is able to overcome this insidious illness and even when we are able to, it doesn't mean that we are ever able to forget about it, as it still remains within us, but that doesn't mean we aren't able to get on with life.
ECT is a big decision and I can understand that you feel as though it's an option which you are considering, so it would not be fair for me to say that you need to keep trying to find someone who you can connect with, all I want to say is please read up on all the advice about ECT, especially asking the psych you might now be seeing, but also if you could watch someone having ECT and wonder whether or not this is what you want to happen. Geoff.

Hi. I have also considered ECT. I have not yet done this but I did find out a lot about the procedure. It is much refined these days, but does require multiple treatments over several weeks. Each treatment is done under a general anaesthetic, so it is not just a zap then better. For me, living in a remote area, it was virtually impossible to be able to have a course. I think some places require you to be an inpatient for several weeks, but I'm not sure if this is always required.

I did see ECT being done on a patient in the ABC TV series Changing Minds (series 1, episode 2) which is available online. The guy had had several ECT treatments over the years. Unfortunately, it is not a permanent solution.

I am not a dr. But I do keep up on options for treatment. There have been several new treatments for depression being trialled or now in use. These include transcranial stimulation and latest trials on ketamine administration seem promising - black dog institute website have more information on these.

Make sure you investigate all of your options. Over many years and several very long bouts of depression, I really can't say what works for me. I have felt better after doing online CBT, but this does require ongoing commitment to complete the course. Other episodes just seem to spontaneously resolve, perhaps life improves, circumstances change and the sun just starts shining again. This has been after 5-8yr episodes. I wish I did know what my switch was, all I do know is that it is there. Sunshine always follows rain.

Thanks for replying, I'm going to ask my psychiatrist for their thoughts on this. I will add that I have connected with psychologists all 3 have actually been great I think it's just me..

Thanks for sharing, I will take a look at that episode.. I also try keep up with new treatment methods and have tried the newest antidepressants. I have also read about ketamine trials and that'd be sick if it works. I may just keep sticking it out and hope something great comes out 1 day... sorry to hear you have a similar problem
