Can I get a mental health care plan from a GP I've never seen before?

Basically, the question in the title.

I'm struggling a bit right now, and I need to get my plan re-done before I can see my psychologist again. However, my usual GP is very popular and I can't get in to see him for a fair while (not to mention he's a pain to get to due to distance. I'm looking at transferring to a new GP at some stage if I can find one I like).

Anyway, I need my care plan reassessed, but I was wondering - if I was to book an appointment with a GP I've never seen before, at a practice I haven't been to before, are they able to do that? Or do they need my medical history to do it?

Thanks for any assistance.

hi there and welcome

you can see any dr about your mh. like anywhere new youll need to fill out a few papers before you see the gp (name, address, details, allergies etc- normal stuff) but then when you go into your appt that time is yours to use and get out what you need to. those papers also give them permission to get your medical records from your other gp so you wont need to worry about that, its up to them to do.

so yep you can see any go about your mhcp 🙂

Dear LLyesmith~

Startingnew has given you the facts, you can of course see another GP.

I think that you would need to book a long appointment and be prepared to say in a fair bit of detail your current state. Plus be able to explain why you wished to switch doctors - nothing wrong with doing that, happens all the time, but the new doctor may wish to know.

You might also need to wait for the new doctor to get your information from your exiting one, perhaps the practice receptionist/admin person many be able to arrange that in advance.

Hi LLyesmith, absolutely, but you will have to sign forms from your old doctor to release all your documents to the new doctor.

Good Luck.

Geoff.
