ASD+Dyslexia - Adult psych specialists

Hi there

I'm getting very aggravated at the fact that my poor husband who is suffering terrible social symptoms has been knocked back by two autism specialist psychiatrists because he is an adult. I am an ex-nurse and cared for my mum with MDD for many years but I've never found it so difficult to get in to see someone.

He finally decided that this might be the issue, has a referral from GP and a mental health plan, but can't proceed with new treatment without a formal diagnosis of ASD (asperger's) and dyslexia. He has been treated for depression and anxiety for almost 10 years now but it doesn't help his social symptoms. He is about to be fired from yet another job for "behavioural" issues when this could be easily solved if he had a formal diagnosis. Just for context, he has worked through numerous online tests for both Asperger's and dyslexia and scores in the "high likelihood" range for both.

Can anyone help me find a ASD psych specialist who would be willing to assess him? Looked at autism australia website with no luck!

hi Rosie, you may have probably done this already but if you google 'how to find a ASD psych specialist' a list will come up, not sure whether it will help or not. Geoff.

Dear Alwaysrosie~

I'd like to welcome you here and really sympathize. Trying to get specialist medical help can be a very long and taxing road. Here in the bb Forum it's quite beyond our capabilities to recommend specific practitioners.

Having said that I would suggest you have a talk to our professionals on our 24/7 Help Line, 1300 22 4636. They are very experienced and deal with a very wide variety of matters - not just emergencies. if they don't have any exact answers they may well be able to direct you to those that do.

I do hope you can get this sorted quickly

Thanks geoff - will definitely give that a go.

Thanks Croix - any tip is a good tip! I will give them a call.

I have one son with Aspergers ADHD, another son with severe autism and ADHD. After their diagnosis my partner saw a psychologist who specialised in Autism and he was then diagnosed as Aspergers and ADD. He only see's a psychiatrist for scripts for the ADD. Not sure what state you are in , we are Bic based and rang Amaze to get names of psychologists who assess adults. Good luck. It has certainly helped me understand some of his traits and he's great at explaining how and why things overwhelm the kids as he has lived it his whole life

Thanks Shad0w. We had a look at the Amaze lists but I guess it's time to give them a call. His triggers are mostly work based so we really need a formal diagnosis to have some measures placed around his work. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for you with kids involved. We only have cats!
