I have a family member struggling with mental health issues

The gp and hospital are just wanting to precribe moreof her medication that just basically turns her into a zombie.

She wants to be commited but her local health service are denying this and no longer seeing her.

Is there anyway as her family member I can do something to make this happen?

Hi Make1

May I suggest you call the beyond blue help line or lifeline. Either of the 2 will be able to assist you in the best direction. There is also crisis line and they have people who can help also.

Best of luck. I do hope your family member gets the help they need.

hi Make 1. Sorry to hear about your family member struggling with mental health.

It sounds like you are not happy with the advice she has been given by her current GP. It is ok to get a second oppinion from another GP. I suggest trying to see another GP. Look up your local GP centers. I suggest looking at their website and seeing if any of the GPs have an interest in mental health (this is how I found my current gp and she is fantastic). I would suggest you possibly go with your family member to the appointment (if your family member is ok with you going of course) and discussing your concerns about her current treatment with them. I would make sure you book a long appointment with the gp so you have enough time to go over their history. You can also discuss her maybe seeing a psychiatrist for medication advice. GPs can treat some mental health problems and manage their medications themselves, however sometimes people require specialists to manage their medication. It sounds like this maybe the case for your family member. Psychiatrists only work in mental health and know more about all types of mental illness and best courses of treatment from their (e.g. my mum has bipolar and her gp couldn't get her medication right themselves, so they referred her to a psychiatrist till the medication was right, now her gp manages her).

Hope some of this advice helps. It can be really frustrating getting a treatment right. I know this first hand. But I was happy I was persistent because now I am on the right track
