Coping in the emergency department

Centaured
Community Member
Sometimes in mental health crisis's we end up in the emergency department. And that totally ok, being safe is important.
but how do we cope with our crisis while waiting?
What are some helpful strategies you have found useful during your stay in the department?

I often get stuck in the emergency room waiting room overnight due to the fact there is no mental health team 24/7 where I live. I'm really struggling being here tonight. My usual strategies of listening to music isn't really working so I'm wondering if there is anything else I should try. Please note my concentration and attention is limited due to being in crisis. I feel trapped and stuck.
I wish lifeline text was 24/7 coz I could really use someone to talk to. Are there any other online options as I cant really call someone due to the nature of a waiting room.

I move tomorrow...fly out in less then 28hrs. Anxious as hell. We feel like we can't do it. The dissociation and splitting has been really bad leading up to this. The stress is getting to us I guess.
The core unit hasn't been around much, they can't cope wishing not to be around. It's times like this they're grateful for DID. We are survivors. We will get through this too.

Hi Centaured,

I know how you feel, literally.

You are not a failure. The fact you devoted yourself to serve the community is so admirable despite what the lowest common denominators in society say. Your service is valued, appreciated and wherever you decide to go from here just know there are people who care and appreciate you.

the first responder/emergency services shortcomings is a serious cultural issue that needs addressing, and there are people advocating for change but it's a slow lengthy process.

In the meantime, I hope you can find peace of mind and engage with us all here at BB and recognize your worth to us all.

I've been in your shoes with those feelings you've shared. Trust me, you are not alone and it will get better. We got you.

Regards,

Rhys

Hey C

how did your move go?

I was in hospital myself recently and find transitions hard... moving being a major major one.
I know it's so stressful but I am proud of u.

Move hasn't gone so well. I give up. Why try anymore....

Hey Centaured,

Thanks for reaching out tonight.

We're sorry to hear the move hasn't gone well. Would you feel comfortable sharing more about your move with us?

We hope that you keep checking in to let us know how you're going, whenever you feel up to it.

I'm homeless and all alone in this city and state I don't know. It doesn't look like I'll get housing any time soon either. I have given up looking for a place to live and ready to give up on everything else too. Life just isn't for me, it's pointless.

Hi C

Tha's awful. You are far also from ur dad and have moved bravely which I didn't do when i lived in a toxic environment. You're a survivor and amazing.
That's overwhelming and so scary to not have somewhere to live. Are u okay? Is it cold where you are?
Housing is such a struggle for so many. To have a home that is safe. I send you warmth and good wishes, for a place that is safe for u

Hey Centaured,

I'm in hospital.

So far all my referrals for accommodation had been rejected cos of safety concerns....isn't that the point of supported accommodation?

Next week im booked in for a motel on discharge. It's a roof at least.

Hi C - that's so irritiating. When someone needs the help that's when they should get it. A motel sounds like a well-deserved break!
