Now this may be obvious to point out that walking on the beach is healthy, both mentally and physically. But I think we really need to look into what makes this activity so great.
Two hours in nature reduces stress. Plus the happiness of walking amongst other people, not being too focused one oneself and observing the sights and sounds. Plus walking on the beach is a free thing to do, and is just so fun to do, and different sights and sounds happen every day.
So… for those experiencing mental illness including PTSD (like myself)… we should make it a goal to spend at least 2 hours on the beach (walking, sitting down and reading, etc).

Hi ScarlettR,
I completely agree with you. I love walking on the beach and in nature generally. I have a favourite spot by the ocean on a rocky hill with a wonderful view of the sea and surrounding landscape. I’ve seen dolphins playing in the water from there and sometimes a whale. Going to such places has been absolutely integral to my mental health. I am diagnosed with C-PTSD. Sometimes if my nervous system can’t get any relief I go somewhere in nature like that, especially my favourite spot, and I will stay there about 3 hours. It often takes that long for my system to kind of settle and let go, but then I will feel different as I walk back to my car and I know that I am better than when I arrived.
I think being immersed in the sights, sounds, smells etc of nature can be powerfully healing. There is also a thing called “forest bathing” you may have heard of. Apparently plants release compounds that actually help our immune system and health. So there is a very literal and physical benefit to our wellbeing that comes from immersion in nature.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and all the best to you.
Hugs,
Eagle Ray

Hi ScarlettR,
Thanks for sharing this amazing tip. This reminds me how disengaged I've been with nature although I love walks and hikes. Partially blaming the terrible winter that's always been raining and gloomy when ever I have free time.
I particularly like to go for walks with meet up groups where I end up having amazing stories to share with each other and find long lasting friendships.
Since you mentioned about reading, do you have any suggestions as I've run out of recommendations.
Best of luck with your exciting walks!

Hi BlueLily,
Yes, group walks are definately fun, and one feels supported when walking in nature surrounded by people and the opportunity to socialise.
As for books to read - this may sound biased but I personally like reading mystery stories, like Sherlock Holmes. Or period drama stories in general. Maybe books that turned into movies? I use my iPad to read e-Books.

Hi ScarlettR,
I've read mystery but not considered period drama. Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check them out!
