SLEEP

Hi All,

In the past there may have been threads on sleep and how to improve our quality of sleep.

I am starting this thread up and hope to include past thread titles.

For some of us sleep is a real issue, the more we can learn about it the better informed we will be.

Funny stories on weird places you have fallen asleep are welcome as well.

For me, I had just moved house and was very busy getting everything organised. Friends invited me to the drag races. I was so tired and exhausted that I sat down, leant against the fence right near the starting line and fell asleep for most of the evening.

Hope to read some of your stories and tips.

Cheerio for now, from Mrs. Dools

Hello Eternal Happiness,

Thank you for your very helpful reply..

Unfortunately I live in a fairly isolated little village and the nearest hospital is around 80 kilometre, Doctors are very limited here, to do the sleep lad test I need to go into a much larger town. I haven't asked but I'm quite sure that they wouldn't have the sleep lab equipment here to be able to do it at home, but I will definitely ask next time I see my gp...

I do have trouble sleeping, I think the new meds are causing some sort of dream, I rarely have panick attacks at night..

I recently had X-rays of my jaw as it's causing pain. They said it's damaged by trauma which happened many years ago and also has arthritis iin the joint as well....

Thank you once again for answering my question, it really means a lot to me...

Grandy..

I am no health profession or doctor, but I always feel that there is always better ways to fix a problem before taking the pill. When problem solving, everyone should take a scientific approach but these days we want pills to solve our problems. If I were you, it wouldn't hurt to pay a visit to a GP that can provide you with a a referral to a sleep clinic such as Resleep or any hospital that specializes in sleep issues. We have a depression epidemic as well as people sleeping rough and whenever I go to my sleep physician, they are always, always packed and fully booked up. If I were you, it wouldn't hurt to pay a visit. Thankfully, there is a machine that breathes for you if you do have respiratory problems.

Today my chiropractor told me about visualisation/meditation technique to help with sleep.

Basically, you imagine you are at the top of a staircase. You step down onto the first step which is red. Spend a few moments picturing red things - tomatoes, red roses, bricks, apples, fire truck, etc. Fill your mind with all shades of reds - light reds to dark reds. Enjoy the colour red.

When you are ready step down to the next step which is the colour orange. Spend a few moments visualising orange things - sun, oranges, carrots, etc. Enjoy the colour orange.

Step down to the next step which is yellow. Visualise yellow things - bananas, lemons, etc. Enjoy the colour yellow.

Step down to the next step which is green. Visualise green things - grass, spinach, etc. Enjoy the colour green.

Step down to the next step which is blue. Visualise blue things - sky, water, swimming pool, etc. Enjoy the colour blue.

Step down to the last step which is violet. Visualise violet things - flowers, grapes, etc. Enjoy the colour violet.

The colours are meant to have something to do with chakras or something like that. It doesn't really matter which order you do the colours in as long as you start with red and end in violet. Even if you forget the colours in between you just naturally go to the next similar colour. If you get to violet you just start again at red.

I haven't tried this yet but it sounds interesting and I am willing to give anything a try.

Hello Fred4761.

Thank you for sharing what your chiropractor suggested you try..

I’ll give it a try for a few nights as well, like you fared..I will try anything..

Grandy.

Hi Fred and everyone

Admittedly I was very tired but still I think in residue of mania which is near impossible to sleep through although meds for now work most of the time.

I tried your Red step routine ( 2nd post above) which you explained very well and apart from Chakras that I know little about, one day I'll look into it. I have a feeling they're to do with our energy but could be way off.

Anyhoo it worked. I was asleep before hitting the 3rd step I think. I want to memorise the colours, good they don't have to be in order as long as Red first and Violet last.
So the only non rainbow colour's Indigo.

Googled Chakras, thought it was to do with energy.

Chakras are circular vortexes of energy lying across seven different points on our spinal column. The seven chakras are connected to different glands and organs in the body and are responsible for uniform distribution of “Chi” (also called “Qi” or Praana or life energy) through them.Jul 21, 2016

I've had more success than not counting back in 3's from 1000. The blokes incorrect guaranteeing us not to reach 0 but it does work.

Thanks for your input 🙂

Hi All,

It has been a while since I have dropped in here. I like the ideas of the different colours on the steps, from the sounds of it Fred, they are the colours of the rainbow.

I might give it a go tonight when I am having trouble sleeping due to various aches and pains.

At present I have a cardboard box in the end of the bed to help elevate the quilt off my legs so I can manoeuvre my moon boot in the bed and keep the weight off my sore ankle. Hopefully I will be able to take it off soon.

Need to work on my exercises to helpfully reduce the amount of pain I experience at night.

Cheers all from Dools

Hello Dools

Thankyou for the great thread topic! Its always a bonus to pick up some tips from the people that are doing it hard and have found a technique that helps them sleep

If anyone having difficulty sleeping (for a protracted period) it is always a good move to see our GP when our natural methods fail

We have so much to gain and nothing to lose by doing so

I hope your pain subsides sooner than later Dools

Paul

I agree with Paul If anyone having difficulty sleeping (for a protracted period) it is always a good move to see our GP when our natural methods fail.

My son has had long term problems with tiredness, snoring, depression which led to multiple psych hospital admissions, loss of job & general difficulty coping with life despite psych treatments & meds. A couple of months ago he had a sleep study which diagnosed severe sleep apnea. Within a couple of weeks of treatment his life was turned around as the tiredness left. His depression seems to have gone, he is now working a new job he loves but has the energy & motivation to enjoy his children & help around the house which he hadn't done before.

Obviously not everyone will be so lucky to get a treatable diagnosis like my son but it is still worth discussing sleep issues with your doctor to see if anything can be done.

Hi Paul, Elizabeth and All Reading,

Overt he years I have asked Drs. for something to help me sleep, I haven't found anything much to be effective. Even as a child I had difficulty sleeping. Some medications gave me at least a 4 hour block of sleep.

My current Dr. seems reluctant to give me any kind of medication after last years toxic reaction I experienced. Paul, it is great you have something that works for you.

A sleep study certainly does sound worthwhile Elizabeth. I might make enquiries with my Dr about that.

Last night I put ear plugs in to block out the noise and opened the window to the bedroom for some fresh air. We have a lot of trucks going past all hours of the night. It seems in my sleep I took the ear plugs out and I awoke to a truck slowing down for the town limits making a huge racket.

I found the ear plugs in the bed! They certainly are not very effective when they are not in your ears! Maybe I need to use masking tape tonight to keep them in my ears!

Cheers all from Dools

I hope you find something to help you Dools,

I’ll be following this thread. Sleep is something that isn’t happening at the moment. 2-3 hours of sleep a night since the beginning of August. I’ve tried meditation, yoga, sleep hygiene, prescription sleeping tablets etc. It’s really getting frustrating as I’m trying to hold down a job, be a single mum etc. It’s definitely a struggle. I can see why they use sleep deprivation as a form of torture!
