Remembering the bad/good ole days

Recently I posted about how life was growing up and the hardships my family and I faced. (See-saw, Marjorie door..Staying well)

Although the younger generation might role their eyes or tell how things have changed and not to dwell, I've found comfort in remembering how the simple pleasures in life can be the most enjoyable. We place so much pressure on ourselves trying to live up to social standards and forget just how uncomplicated life can be without those constraints.

When I was little, I lived in a busy prominent street where all the neighbours knew who and where people in our area were. I walked out of my home down the street naked as a toddler and was bought back by someone over a block away. My parents invited them in, shared a simple meal and played cards till late while they talked and laughed about me 'touring' the neighbourhood.

We didn't have a phone or a TV, but managed to find things to do. Music and hourly news would fill the air most of the time and 'playing' meant enjoying whatever was laying around the yard or house. As I grew older, tinkering in our shed became an exercise in exploration and adventure. Ooh...so much junk!!

Do you have stories that reflect how spoiled we've become in society and how life 'was' in opposition to now?

Hey Dizzy

You rang so many bells...the list is endless....:-)

Ill keep it brief to make it amusing..

1983......Paul doing a long service relief for 3 months when working at the national W supermarket chain.......The staff room was about 8 meters long that could sit about 20 staff........

  • an ashtray every 2 feet....seriously (every 600mm for fans of the metric system)
  • no occupational health & safety police
  • we used common sense....not the Worksafe Police...
  • my cashiers office....3 staff....3 ashtrays...
  • purchasing/general office....2 staff....2 ashtrays
  • customers....no ashtrays.....just butted them out on the floor

Hugs 4 You Dizzy

Oh Paul...smoking indoors...ashtrays came in all shapes and sizes eh? I made one at school for my mum for mother's day. I too remember shared office space where the air could be cut with a knife.

I was thinking about TV and how the programs have now been taken over by reality shows. When I was a kid, the only one I really remember was on ABC. The gardening program (Sundays) with the man that had a prominent whistle when he pronounced 's'. He died a few years back. I think it was Allen ?

The other one was Julius Sumner-Miller; ABC science professor who scared the be-Jesus out of me. But I loved it all the same.

I remember hearing my parents argue about paying their television licence. I look back and think "How would they police this?" I think that's why it ended.

Here in the regional centre, we only had 2 channels. One local and the ABC. How many cattle and sheep reports can a child be subjected to? I mean, come on!

Cheers...Dizzy x

Hello Dizzy

How are you today? Feeling a bit better? I hope so. Working in my volunteer role is what triggered my tears. I sort of said I may not return for a while but I feel better today so maybe it was a one-off and I will be OK tomorrow.

I was reading your reply to James and thinking how strong you sounded. I also live alone, basically. My 19yo grandson lives with me but would be traumatised for life if I asked him to discuss how suicidal I felt. And he lives in his room when he is at home. I gather this is normal for teenagers but I don't remember doing it and I find it infuriating. Makes me sound like an old granny I think. Come to think of it I am a grandma, and age is a matter of perspective.

Take care of yourself.

Mary

Hi Mary;

If you want to chat, go to my thread; 'I'm so bloody angry' on 'Employment and Workplaces' section.

I'd like to keep this for the good ole days subject matter if that's ok.

warm thoughts...Dizzy xo

  • Ross Wilson (Daddy Cool) released Eagle Rock in 1971
  • Blond dude is showing his age here Dizzy...lol
  • Incinerators were available from Mitre10 lol

Paul xxoo

Eagle Rock!! Yeah! A great song with a great guitar hook. I'm an oldie (but goody) too. Spirit in the Sky is another song I loved.

Popular music from that era has made a come-back many times and rightly so. My son thought Jimmie Hendrix was alive in his 20's and living in LA. When I said he was dead and was around in my youth, he argued. Thankyou You-Tube as my reference. It's nice to be right once in a while ha ha.

Why buy an incinerator when a 44 gallon drum was just as good?! Burning leaves in the gutter was tolerated too!

Real cocaine in Coca-Cola?

A medication 'suitcase' through doctor shopping by my Nan. Most of them are on the Carcinogenic List these days.

A massage was done by a physio at footy or a sex worker.

I watched the (pilot) first episode of Sesame Street! I was around 8. "Two vampire fangs; 1, 2, Ya ha ha"

Falling in a shopping centre meant going to the doctors instead of the solicitors.

Taxi's had a flag-fall of 12c. There was actually a flag on the end of the turning mechanism.

The National Anthem at the close (?) of TV service. (10:30pm around here!)

Talk about a sheltered childhood...

Hey Dizzy The Time Machine

You and I had the same sheltered childhood for sure 🙂

  • Unleaded Fuel 15.9cents/Liter in 1978 lol
  • An Akai Video Cassette Recorder with HI FI sound was $1500-00 in 1982 lol

Time machine...hehe

My parents home cost $26,000...brand new brick veneer open plan 3 bed 1 bath 1/4 acre corner block!

The current mean price around here for similar quality is 1500% higher. Block size so much smaller.

Rents have increased 800% (2400% when the mining boom was on!)

Wages from this era have risen around 1000% Though some Awards more than others.

Hey! Where's my other 500% wage rise?

Morning Dizzy
