Dear Abusedtoy~
I'm afraid the answer to this question is not as straightforward as one might think. Both can coexist together, in fact they are meant to.
Basically your DSP is provided to give you the financial support you need for you to live on as you cannot work yourself. the NDIS provides other benefits not associate with those provided by the DSP. They are supplied to make your life easier if your disability is making it harder.
Geoff explains it quite well here:

(paste the link as one long line in your browser).
The implications of all this and also applying for NDIS benefits are complex and non-intuitive. I suggest you seek professional help before doing anything.
For example in part of one state BAPTCARE assists with applications, but everywhere is different.
I guess your first task is to find who can assist you in your geographic area. While I do not know I think maybe your GP may know which organization to approach as most GP are not conversant with the exact wording and requirements for specific NDIS plans and may not always have as much success as dedicated organizations
