listening to music

sitting here 5.20 am keeping an eye on all my new friends( I feel like you are all my friends) even though we have never met. listening to my normal music. These songs play over and over night after night. there meanings to me all differ but all help in there own way. you see my music is like therapy for me. songs like 'just give me a reason', 'mad world' 'someday never comes' and 'standing on the outside' are just a few of my favourites. and depending on my mood is how each song makes me feel. I feel as though I can relate to so many of the songs in so many ways. 90% make me cry but then again so does 90% of my life. right now im listening to 'somebody I used to know' and oh its like the singer has stepped into my shoes for this song. big thanks to GA and Suzbj for keeping me company on here tonight. I don't feel half as bad now thankyou.

hanging in there,

HMP

Hi Helpmeplease

I agree with you in regards to listening to music.  For me a lot of the songs i hear on the radio make me cry. The words to the songs are so emotional. And then some songs I can singalong and even tap the steering wheel while driving.

It's weird how songs can trigger so much emotion.

Hope you get some sleep tonight.

Take care

Hi HMP

I’m so glad you had some lovely company last night … and I agree with you so much about music and songs.  There are just some amazingly clever people out there (song writers) who can just construct the most relevant string of words together, add in some kind of tune to it and whammo, a brilliant song is created.

And it matters not one bit what music it is that we like … we are all so incredibly different with our likes etc, but what is important is that we can have some music (when needed) to help us.

And music has so many ways of affecting us …

So yeah, that’s what I wanted to say.  Nice and to the point (I think I must be coming down with something, hey GA? – most unlike Neil).

Cheers

Neil

Hi HMP.

You are more than welcome. We insomniacs ....I mean night owls need to hoot together.

Neil-

Hi Help Me please, I also love music. And yes it is all about moods. Lately I experience a lot of music on youtube. It is so wonderful for being able to look up music from the past as well as all the modern stuff. A couple of nights ago I stumbled across R.E.M's, Everybody Hurts. It is a wonderful song. Straight after that, I listened to Shiny, Happy People. You couldn't get two songs with such opposite themes.  Both produce different, but welcoming emotions. Each in their place. Which is a bit like life in general.

In reply to the actual topic, I have recently been listening to Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks and Death Cab for Cutie. I too find that listening to sad music doesn't make me sad, it actually makes me feel a little better- the evidence that someone somewhere has felt the same emotions as me.

Hi GA

I totally know what you mean about listening to sad music. So many of my friends and family cant understand why I listen to such music if im already feeling down. But for me most of my fav songs all have a special meaning to me. which in turn makes me feel better even if only for a little while.

I see that it looks like another long night on my end. Did you go to your appointment to do? if so how are you feeling now?

HMP

Hi HMP,

It was a slightly late night on my end but I managed to get a few hours sleep this morning. An afternoon nap might be in order. I wish you had gotten more sleep. I like when the world is quiet in the wee hours but sleep deprivation sucks.

My appointment went well, the euphoria has worn off and I'm now back in the pit of worrying about when my next appointment is going to be. I do have homework so to speak to work on from my psych so new coping mechanisms to try.

I used to listen to 'sad' music when I was feeling sad, seeking out the lyrics that matched what i was feeling. If I was really depressed, I'd drag out the Radiohead, I think thats the music equivalent of whisky, the hard stuff! Now I tend to listen to music that will either lift my mood or really make me smile. Listening to icky smily love songs when you're sick of seeing everyone else around you in happy relationships is off the menu though. Does everyone think music or lyrics are more important for them? For me I think its both.

Hey Jess

Great question ... I do have a fair number of bands or performers that I like and for some reason, their lyrics really hit a (sorry for the pun) chord with me.  And that's probably why I like these bands (even though I do get gyped or teased by my 25yo nephew for one of my choices) - I (and our fam even) really enjoy "the Chad" who is Chad Kroeger and is the lead singer of the band Nickleback.  And I tell you, some of the songs that he has written really hit the spot for me.

If you haven't heard it before, do a google search for that band and the song, "If today was your last day".

To people who are new on this site, I often quote a line out of that song, something along the lines of:  "That first step you take is the longest stride";  which refers to them coming to B.B. forums and posting their first ever post and being a bit, you know, nervous about it.  So I quote to them from the gospel of St Chad.  🙂

Cheers

Neil
