Any household chores you find fun and mentally stimulating?

I believe it's important to keep up with household chores on a daily basis - not only for the house maintenance, but it occupies your mind and you get a mental and physical exercise from it.

The household chores I do find fun are laundry, believe it or not! I'm a bit of a shopaholic and like buying nice clothes to cheer myself up. So to wash nice clothes then hang them up to dry in preparation for a next big day/ night out is really exciting to me.

I don't wish to list any households I don't really like doing - just the ones I enjoy.

Well if you don't want any negativity, then I can say I positively enjoy anything not remotely resembling housework! Lol.

I don't mind doing the washing & I always change the bed linen (but that's because I'm obsessive about having it done my way).

I'll be interested to read others responses.

Cheers, topsy.

Hi Scarlet, this is an interesting topic you chose. I can understand a little why you like to do the laundry, as I like pegging items on the clothesline outside. Especially if it is windy and sunny. I am not sure why that is though.

I also like folding up freshly washed and sun dried fluffy towels. Then arranging them neatly in the cupboard. I am not fond of ironing or folding up other items though.

Filling up glass jars with rice, dried pasta, oats etc is also fun and I love to see food items like that all lined up. As well as arranging fruit.

Mmm that is about it for the household chores. Is pulling weeds and other gardening counted? Because I like doing that as well as washing the car.

thankyou

What a curious thread 😊

I like scrubbing the shower. It gives me an excuse to have an extra long hot shower without guilt for wasting water.

Outdoor chores are therapeutic. All types of gardening but I also like sweeping the paths and raking up leaves and sticks ready for the bonfire. Pressure washing the windows. Watering the garden. Anything out in fresh air and sunshine.

This certainly is a little quirky and a wonderfully different way of being aware, mindful and thankful for basic things like housework. Outside work seems to be popular as well.

Recently a friend told me how very thankful she is to be able to do her husband's laundry and her own, as it made her appreciate the fact her husband was still with her.

Sometimes I begin the ironing reluctantly, then have a sense of satisfaction once the job is done.

My niece cracked up laughing one day when she saw my wardrobe as I have all my shirts hanging in colour groups. She thought that was hilarious! Makes it easier for me to find what I am looking for.

I do like the look of our home once I have dusted, vacuumed and mopped the place. Everything is sparkling clean.

Thanks Scarlett for a wonderful idea for a thread!

Cheers All!

Hello Scarlett and everyone else.

I like what you wrote Dools about being mindful. In the days when moms used cloth nappies I loved to see a line of white nappies blowing in the sun. I suspect it was because I had clean nappies which were disinfected by the sun. I think Shelley you enjoy putting your washing out on warm and blowy days because everything is fluffed up, like your towels, and smells of sunshine. Yes there is a sunshine smell.

Getting the washing in is OK but folding, ironing, putting away are jobs I put off until it's necessary. Perhaps I should practice mindfulness Dools and see if I can do better. I love to see my house clean and tidy and I get this done by virtue of paying someone to do it. Whatever works for me.

I wonder if we will get any replies on this thread from the male population. I must think of some stories about housework, I'm sure I have lots.

Mary

Hi Mary and All,

Just had another thought, housework does go better with music!

Yes! Mrs D you've hit the nail on the head. Music up loud!

Hi Mary, it's lovely to see you about again. You'd have loved our washing line then. I did modern cloth nappies and the covers were all the colours of the rainbow. It used to make me feel happy too.

I also agree with the music Mrs D and Quercus. If you need to complete chores quick like put on the fast music. And it's fun if you can dance sort of when you vacuum. I would only do the dancing part if I had the house to myself. Much too self conscious .

Listening to more calming music is great when washing dishes. That is what I like at that time.

And coloured cloth nappies sound kind of happy.

Doolhof: you're welcome. 🙂

I like to have the TV on when I'm doing household chores, especially in the evenings. Having the TV evening news or Home & Away on while I'm washing dishes between 7-9pm takes me back to childhood when my mum used to be in that routine (before the arrival of dishwashing machines).

There's something about laundry that's so easy to do and mentally stimulating. For me, laundry work is easy to do, and it's such a relief to know you only have to perform a few tasks to thoroughly wash even the toughest of clothes.
