Alcohol Free Days (part 2)

Hi folks

April is fast approaching and as a result of the start of a new month I'm going to get off the grog again.  Made it through in February - just that little bit tougher in April though - cause there's a couple more days to get through!!  🙂

If any Beyond Blue poster/community member who reckons they'd like to give this challenge a go with me, I'd LOVE to hear from you on this thread - it'll all commence on Tuesday, so prior to then whoever is interested in trying this, just make sure you've got no more alky-hole in your home cause that'll remove any temptation.  Just a first tip I guess.

No dramas at all if there's no-one, but I just thought I'd put this out there for anyone who is thinking that now might be a good time to have a bit of a 'dry-out'.

ALSO, if any one "does" come on board, again absolutely no dramas if you drop off at some stage.  It's the process of giving it a go is the main thing.

Cheers beers (for a couple more days anyway!)  🙂

Neil

dear Neil, it's great for you to have so much support, but sorry I haven't joined you all, because these days my alcohol intake these days is only small.

Each one of you all will have different breaking points, so if this time you can only last 2 weeks then next time you could make it 3 weeks.

It's not an easy task but I'm behind you all and it's a great effort. Geoff.

Day 4 of April Challenge

I made it through another day. I'm told I should praise myself for that. So well done me. I'm looking forward to the weekend and Friday night isn't bothering me at all. It used to be the worst no alcohol day/evening, but I'm OK with it now.

Well done Mary!  You should definitely be proud of that.

I found yesterday quite easy because Thursdays are training days for the volunteer service I am involved with.  Training keeps me busy until about 10pm, and by then I'm so tired after the physical activity I just go home and it's pretty much straight to bed.

I think having a distraction helps, especially if there is interaction with other people.

Hi all,

Yes, it's now 3 AFD's from me - and from a number of others too, which is great going gang.

John, you're pushing your boundaries to the enth (is that a word?) degree, by taking yourself off to a club - man, if you come out of that with another AFD to your name, that will be MAJOR achievement.  Not to mention possibly immeasurable brownie points earned in front of your lady friend.  🙂

I'm half in Vera's court in that ... it's nigh on impossible - no it IS impossible for me to just have one or two beers and that's it.  Nope, cannot do that.  But we all have our vices don't we?

Hey, here's an interesting question to the 'sober ones' amongst us (or to whoever is reading) - we're doing this to abstain away from alcohol.  But there's never many mentions of people who smoke, for them to try and go a month without it?

I personally don't smoke and never have - but I wonder how many readers out there ARE smokers?

Hey Mary, again I'm with you on the alcohol/fitness thing.  It is incredible that if you've been say, running for a fair while and built up a base of fitness, but then for whatever reason, you can't do it for a short while - say two weeks, when you come back it's a real struggle.  Having said that, yes it IS a struggle to start off with, but because you've had that foundation base there prior, your rise back to that level IS quicker than if you were just starting out from the beginning.

I'm not sure if that relates to the same with the staying away from alcohol.  Yes it does Neil - when you've been off it for a while, and then you start again, while you can't drink as much as you did when you left off, it doesn't take too long till you're acclimatised to nudging back the odd beer or forty every night (ok, just jokes folks on the forty!).

dear Mary, I know that you can do it Mary, you have been there before, so you know all the triggers to start again, and this is good, because you have experienced them before, and this is becoming a stronger person, the same as what happens when trying to overcome depression, because you have learnt from previous times. Hello everyone. How are we all going?

I guess the weekends are harder for us all because of that deserved feeling and a treat for all the hard work during the week.

I hope you have a really nice night John with your lady friend.

i am going to watch tv as I love QI as I always learn something new from that show and then the series filmed in Ballarat which is getting better and better.

i managed to cycle today further then ever and am so pleased with that. what I am really amazed with though is how at first I could only do really short distances and now I am going really far. And where does this desire come from to do more?

I really don't know what is happening but from my reading of latest research on depression they now believe that anti depressants - which stopped working for me- do not work on serotonin but encourage formation of new neurotransmitters which give our brains spark plugs. When they stop working no firing of these spark plugs which keep us going.

Apparently, another way of forming these spark plugs is aerobic exercise. This is why I am cycling bec we don't have a gym in town nor a pool.

As you all know dear friends there are no universal treatment for our ails. But little by little I am feeling better. Strange but true.

Hi everyone.

It is 12.15am and I just got home. The club soda was very nice. Boring, but nice. Still sober.

Regards, John.

You total champion. Good on you

Ba baam.... Not sure how to spell it but that's the sound of the game show buzzer when they get the answer wrong. I'm out guys. I need to take smaller steps.  A month is too long for me as it turns out.

Dear Mary,

yes why put pressure on yourself when the planets are not aligned for you to abstain. I fully agree. In the scheme of what we struggle with drinking or not drinking stays in the cue until ready to be tackled.

Kind regards Vera
