David Bowie - pioneer for making people think about gender identity?

Another amazing talent now shines as a star in the sky. David Bowie seemed to push gender boundaries in a natural way, not just for the theatrics.

Do you think he helped everyday people start to think about gender in a different way?

Hi Paul,

He did and so many others did also.

Gay rights protesters, promoting the mardi gra, workplace changes to stop discrimination and so on.

My cousin has 5 children of which one is gay. He wanted to attend the Mardi Gra. So all the family went !!! That was unheard of many years ago.

So it has been a revolution , a welcomed one.

What I learned from the likes of Bowie is to be yourself no matter what. For we are all unique.

David Bowie gave me some great questions that I spent my life trying to unravel. In the seventies his gender identity was on the lips of gossip mongers a plenty and this included my friends and family. For me though, I hid my inquisitive self; people can be cruel.

I'd heard stories about Bowie and Jagger having an '...illicit affair' as it was reported back then. I remember thinking to myself; "Could this be right?" That's when my questions began. It wasn't specific, the whole idea and concept was confusing especially due to his notoriety and as you say, theatrics.

So for me as everyday folk, it gave the opportunity to view a world I didn't know existed and question other relevant issues. I kept an open mind and looked at myself too.

Thanks David Bowie...and as you say Paul...the Star Man...another legend pioneer.
