Anyone had to spend days alone without anyone to talk to?

Hi all, apart from here and a brief visit to church last night (to make it feel Christmassy and to just be with people) I've had day after day for weeks now with nobody at all to talk to. This time of year especially it's really depressing. Old friends that live far away are gradually losing contact with me - I ring them but they don't ring me. I understand they're busy with their live elsewhere but still it's hard when you're lonely. I'm going to a Christmas Eve service at the local church tomorrow night to at least be with people for a little while... but otherwise all day I'm alone, just me and the dog. Sometimes I strike up a conversation on BB but then the other person disappears and that's the end of that...

How are people meant to cope with prolonged periods of social isolation? I read, I watch DVDs, normally I'd go for long walks with the dog but thick smoke from bushfires and intense hot weather have stopped that. I go to a café alone sometimes. Any ideas/help?

Hi mmMekitty and everyone

Sorry I'm only on here at BB haphazardly - I haven't had much time today at all.  I hope you are managing the forums OK with your challenges with your vision mmMekitty, I am impressed how well you manage with everything you have to deal with!  We had a lovely sunny day here today, but the wind picked up this afternoon and we only reach 7 degrees tomorrow.  It's been a very cold winter, but when I look at the heatwaves they are having in Europe I am glad it's winter here!  I detest hot weather, it makes me quite sick.  As long as I can put on a warm coat and go for a walk I can cope with winter!

Vegetables are good for dogs, but I don't know about cats - I must look that up, I never thought about it!

I hope you are steadily recovering from your surgery, you've had quite a year.  I am off to watch the ABC news and Insiders on the ABC!  🙂

Hello lovely Hanna, mmMeKitty,Paws,Deebi and everyone..🤗..

Just popping in to say hello to you and the others here supporting you...

It was a nice sunny day here....With the wind this afternoon a huge branch fell from the gum tree across from me....I hope some one comes and takes it for fire wood before the council comes to clean it up.....It just missed my front fence...the branches are extended out to be on the council strip....

My little fur girls don’t like vegetables, but I have found out that my newest fur girl eats anything including vegetables.....I used to throw them over to the chickens next door....now I don’t need to because Peppa enjoys them.....It was hard at first to get used to Peppa being so big...now I’m used to her..the hardest thing was to teach her not to jump onto me....she’s a quick learner...

No hurry or need to reply lovely Hanna...just popped in for a chat....and see how you and Sam are doing...

Sending lots of pats for Sam and hugs for you dear friend as well as anyone who likes them...

Grandy..,,

Hi Grandy & everyone

I'm sorry about how slow I am to reply, I have so many appointments etc on this week my feet have hardly hit the ground!  Still more going on tomorrow - Sam to the groomer for a start!  We had rather nice weather today, but I had two appointments in the afternoon so I didn't get to see that much of it unfortunately!

Grandy I hope your back and shoulder are improving a bit!  I'm glad to hear Peppa is settling in so well and yes Sam loves his vegetables - beans, broccoli, sweet potato, carrots, he enjoys all of these!  I'm glad you've given Peppa a loving home as I remember you said she had been poorly treated wherever she was before that.

I'm glad the tree branch missed your house!  I have some overhanging here and Housing never lops them despite all my requests.

People are awful sometimes - I was at the library briefly today and we were talking about the housing problem and I mentioned a utube channel that showed how superb public housing is in Austria - lovely apartments with large landscaped balconies and wonderful views over Vienna - and the woman at the library said that would be wasted on public housing tenants!  i know I should tell her I am in public housing and call her out, but I hate emabarrassing people, so I didn't say anything - and I think people like her will never change anyway, sadly.

I am home rather late today so please accept my apologies that I can't stay here for longer, but it's so nice to see you here and finding your way around the new forums, which isn't easy!!!  Well done you, Grandy!  I hope the store is still going OK on Tuesdays - do you still enjoy it?  I have been decluttering again and dropped some things off to the op shop here the other day...

Pats to your furst and hugs from us here 😀

Hi Hanna,

Sorry for my late reply, too! 😺 I get s sense, this has become quite common lately.

I would like to think people who manage to get public housing do all appreciate what they have, especially considering how they might be living, where, like homeless or couch surfing, or having to stay where they feel unsafe or as a burden, etc. Unfortunately, I do have neighbours who don't seem to care at all, not for the fact they have a roof, not for the possibility they could have friendly relations with neighbours, not for their 'friends' such as they do have, & not for themselves either.

These neighbours get me feeling angry, afraid, & sad too.

What if you do tell Her At The Library, you live in housing, & others do too, & she might then have a more realistic view of who are the people who live in housing. All she sees may be what is presented on commercial tv, which tends to only show 'problem ' tenants, at their worst. Or maybe say to her "I don't understand. What do you mean?" - At the risk of opening a whole big can of worms.

*

I've got a tall tree behind my flat, near the back fence, which is relatively close to the building. I've asked for it to be lopped too, & was told it was 'too big'. So they know it's big, & close to the building. Not sure about how healthy it is, if it's really unhealthy or gets that way, & then we have a really bad storm, & what if? The bendy branches already look long enough to smack the building, upstairs, (not below where I am). & of-course, I can't see well enough to tell them exactly what it does during windy storms.

Maybe I could get a video, if I was to go outside at those times? That kinda scares me just thinking about it.

Think I said somewhere before, I wish I'd tried giving mmMekitty vegies. At least they don't have the fat content meat does.

Hey Hanna, Kitty, Grandy and every one reading, hugs and yes Grandy I'll take a hug back lol.

I am disgusted with 'her at the library' doesn't deserve capital letters lol, I saw your reference to her Kitty and I thought 'he who shall not be named' hahaha.
Absolutely disgusting. I would've embarrassed everyone probably by responding to her. I would have said "Wow your attitude is quite disgusting esp for a person who WORKS IN A PUBLIC Library. Don't you have a Code of Conduct that requires you to be RESPECTFUL" and sometimes I even say, don't bother answering that, it wasn't a question. It was RHETORICAL. Grrrrr. Some ppl all right.

Trees! Grandy, thank goodness it missed your property and indeed I hope someone can use it as firewood.
Not sure if this will help, but if you're concerned about any trees on your rented properties or even from neighbouring properties and have had no resolution so far. Try call your local Council. If they care enough, they can write a letter to the owner, being Housing or private. That's what my eldest d had to do. The trees were still on her HOUSE 6 months later. Eventually the Real Estate came out and said they'd withdraw their business from the owner unless he acted immediately. The trees were pushing her home over!

Glad your new pup likes veg Grandy lol. Our rescue pup did UNTIL he realised he could manipulate us otherwise lol! How did pup go at the groomers Hanna? How are your appts going this week.

Love to you all

Hello Hanna,

How are you lass? I'm hoping that it is only your laptop loss that has you so quiet on here.

I'm sorry to hear of your friends husband passing... it must be hard being so far away from her & not able to call in to support her.

It was very warm & spring like here today... but with the clear sky the temp is starting to plummet now the sun is down... is Sam getting much sun to help with his recovery... I picture him on the chair you bought basking in the sun coming through the window... I hope he is feeling up to his walks & splashing in the river.

You sound like you are very busy these days which is such a change from when you joined here... I hope you are still enjoying your music classes... you don't mention what you are learning lately... which is ok if you don't want to talk about them

Hugs

Hi Paws, I have managed to find you .... my laptop was repaired and I got it back today - on my phone there is no way to find the latest post no matter what I do - on the laptop, which they improved, most threads I have looked I simply cannot find anything but one post - no matter which way I scroll I can't find what it is replying to, and I can't find any way of scrolling through the page numbers - this is so confusing.  No matter which I use, computer or phone, I can't find my way around easily at all, it's soooo time consuming and frustrating!

The days are lengthening and I don't like summer, I like it cool and fresh.... I am a bit unwell so I can't stay long, I hope you and Woofa and everyone are well... Sam is good... is it just me having all these issues with trying to navigate the forums... my over 50s forum is so nice and easy to use, I can see every conversation topic and who is there at one glance...

I am hoping I can find this tomorrow so I might know where I am on this thread!!!!  Sorry for the brief response.... waves to anyone around....

Hi Paws and everyone,

I suspect I must be missing some people to respond to, everything is turning up out of order, so apologies to anyone I am missing... heavy rain all last night and today... witnessed a car which backed into a parked car, scraped all along it, the driver looked, saw what she had done, and sped off - so I left a note for the damaged car with the number plate and my name and number in case they want a statement..the traffic is busy here in the wet weather.

I was chatting to some nice people in a bridge club today but I've never played it and don't know if I would enjoy it - I've never been a card player.. I am not doing music currently as the head of the music school here has changed, the nice fellow who ran it got a position overseas and the new chap is not friendly and decreased my bursary, so the lessons are now too costly - I have purchased a descant baroque recorder and may join the recorder group here... however currently I am rather unwell, it may be a heart condition so I will see how I go after some tests next week, meanwhile I am living more quietly than usual!

I was watching some baroque dancing on utube and it was just wonderful - French I think.  I am considering doing another course next year at the university here, my degrees are out of date now and it would be interesting, but again it might depend on what's available and how well I am.  So we will see.

No walks for Sam today as the weather is so bad.  How is Woofa these days Paws?

The wind is so strong tonight the house is rattling!  A good night to stay indoors and warm.

Oh and just because I mention a possible health issue on here please I detest fuss, so no need to say anything everyone please!!!  It may be nothing and I can't bear people fussing around me.

I enjoy nights like this, cold wet and windy outside and warm and snug indoors!  I got the whole series of The Good Life, that old BBC comedy, for a few dollars at the op shop, so I am off to enjoy it!  hugs oxoxoxo

Hi Hanna, no fuss, just hugs and hope all goes well.

Pity about the new person and your bursary being reduced. You have such a good attitude!
Clearly you're a lifelong learner watching The Good Life lol! Just joking, I meant learning more in a Course possibly.

How beautiful being able to play the piano and other instruments.

Bridge sounds interesting. Are you going to give it a try?

LOVED the Good Life. Gosh it's so funny. All those funny concoctions they come up with and their neighbours being or trying to be so posh and upper class. If I remember correctly.
What a bargain finding that vid at the Op Shop.

The rain just began here after a dry few weeks, sorry Paws I TRIED to push all rain out to the farming lands, didn't work this time. We pretty much don't need any more rain for a LONG time. So much has fallen this year.

Popping in BECAUSE I found you Hanna! Yep the new site is fandangling for me too.

Are you reading anything atm?
I haven't read much except for MH stuff for years.
My daughter gave me Lakota Woman by Mary Brave Bird and Richard Erdoes to read.
I think it's a "heavy" book and not sure I'll manage that well. Sook that I am lol.

Talk soon lovely ladies

Hello Hanna, wave to all,

I do enjoy playing cards just for fun but I've never played bridge... having to play with a partner doesn't appeal to me... perhaps you could go just to watch & see if it might interest you...

I shake my head in disbelief at how selfish some people are... I'm so pleased you were able to get the number plate of the car that drove off...

I'm sorry to hear that you aren't able to continue your music lessons... though I love how you are still looking for new things to try... I had to google baroque recorder... I see it's the same as the one we briefly learnt to play in primary school... not that I remember how to play it now.

Sad news about Judith Durham... the music of our younger days.

Hugs
