I've seen 3 different doctors and they all said I am suffering from vertigo, but I'm not too sure about this. I feel really spaced out, dizzy, disconnected (like there is a glass wall in front of me), head fog, my memory and general concentration/focus is terrible, headaches and fatigue and my emotions feel numb.  I've had every test you can think of and it's all normal. Can this be an episode of depression? I had a very bad episode of depression about 6 years ago but this feels different. It's a very weird and uncomfortable feeling. 😕

Hi Penny

When it comes to why we're feeling the way we are, doesn't hurt to wonder. When a GP or specialist says something like 'Sometimes these things just happen for no obvious reason', my attitude is the body doesn't do what it does for no good reason. There's always a reason.

I imagine it's incredibly frustrating, having so many tests but not finding any significant answer other than vertigo. If it is vertigo, the question is 'What's causing it?'. Wondering if any of the doctors have tested for sleep apnea. As a gal who's felt the effects of sleep apnea, your list of symptoms sound so familiar to me.

Some doctors love a patient's sense of wonder, with the attitude 'Can't hurt to look into it'. Other doctors refuse to wonder beyond the usual suspects when it comes to a list of symptoms. If there are a few things you're wondering about when it comes to what's leading you to feel so horrible, I have to say the best doctor to have on your side is a wonderful one.

Hi Penny, I’ve had the symptoms you describe a year ago and in my case I actually had gut dysbiosis, including a major overgrowth of a pathogenic bacteria that can have neurological effects. Supplements and dietary change drastically improved those symptoms and I felt much better for a long time. However, that may not be the case for you. Just mentioning it out of the myriad of possibilities of what it could be. I’ve just had a return of brain fog, disorientation etc in recent days and I’m getting a blood test tomorrow and doing another advanced microbiome test next week to see if something’s changed again. Doctors won’t necessarily look at the gut microbiome so this is something I had to do through a naturopath.

I also have anxiety and depression that much worsened because of perimenopausal changes. That has a very strange feeling, different from any anxiety or depression I’ve had before. Depending on your age, that may be another consideration. But again, may not be it. Just putting ideas out there in case they’re relevant.

The mind and body are very linked. Really they are the same thing but tend to get conceptualised as if mental and physical are separate domains. Ideally you want a doctor who can look holistically at how everything connects but it’s not always easy to find such a doctor.

I hope you can find the right help. Keep exploring. I believe everything has an explanation and an underlying process. Doctors won’t necessarily see the whole picture in the tests they run, so I’ve found I’ve had to keep doing my own research, think outside the box and find open-minded but evidence-based practitioners who are willing to explore with you to solve things.

I hope you feel better soon and find some answers.
