Slow and steady

In the last week I have been over using alcohol as a way to cope, I was blacking out and not feeling good about it the next day. On Friday I drank again and got into a self harm state so much so that I got my hubby to take me to hospital. This really scared me into trying to change, learning to deal with depression and anxiety and fighting rather than giving in. Went to my first AA meeting today which was really good. There's still along way or me to go but I am determined to get there.

Hey Redhead,

you had the strength to get help from your husband and the hospital. That is so good. I too am trying to change after similar scary experiences.  I realise now what a bad mix alcohol and depression are. I kept reading it when I went looking for help online. But somehow didn't think it applied to me. The way it pushes you down that self harm path is very frightening. I hope AA is helpful. My GP suggested it to me but I'm not so sure it's for me.

Keep fighting, it's sounds like you have a lot of determination and strength.

dear Redhead, I can sympathise for you, and this discussion is always one that I can relate to and Mary can as well.

I can't condone you for using alcohol as a numbing factor, because depression is so strong it doesn't allow us any relief.

At your first AA meeting have you been regulated a support person, so if you decide to drink, you can then ring this person and talk to them, who will try and talk your through it.

I have mentioned this before about medication that you can take which will stop the urge to drink, and even if you do drink then there is no buzz from the effects.

Your doctor will know about this medication so if you like go and ask him/her.

I would be inclined to visit different AA meetings, because if you keep going to the same one, the same stories are said every week and it can become monotonous.

Determination is the key, but it's very difficult, but please keep us in touch.L Geoff. x
