Hi all,
Recently started on antidepressants for the first time ever and my parents are acting weird about them. Saying things like it being a 'short term thing' and suggesting ways to improve my mood without them. I think they're being like this because they don't quite understand.
So, to all of you, I was wondering if anyone had any form of resources or articles I can show them to help them understand any part of depression, anxiety and taking antidepressants. Any help at all would be wonderful, I just want to feel supported by my family, and I don't think that will happen until they start to understand.

I don't have any links to articles unfortunately, I was just thinking that maybe taking them to speak with your GP so they can explain it to them and why they put you on them in the first place may help to alleviate their issues with it? It seems they are trying to help however.

Beyond Blue has a range of information you may like to check out. At the top of the page on the second blue tab The Facts. Browse through the available fact sheets and booklets. Send for whatever you may feel is useful or you can download some of the sheets. No charge for either.
Another good source of information is the Black Dog Institute. https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/ There further information at the bottom of this page on National Helplines and Websites which you may feel is useful.
Unfortunately attitudes to mental health are slow to change. In general the older people are the more afraid they get about mental illness. They were brought up in this fear and find it difficult to look past a diagnosis. I think giving them literature can only be helpful. Have you tried talking to your parents about how you feel? Sometimes it helps you and the other person to chat about your mental health.
Discussions on mental health have been taboo in many households and there is often a feeling of shame that someone in the family has a MI. This has been a perception for so long that the reasons for it have been lost. The more we as a community talk about this the more normal it gets to have some form of mental ill health.
