Hello everyone i am new here my name is Kargroth i am 27 yrs young and i have recently been diagnosed withDepressive Anxiety Disorder and Insomnia. recently in 2011 i lost my father, lost my job and recently come out of a three year marriage, yes i know they say bad things come in three's. i am just writing to find out if anyone else has the same disorder as me to be able to relate to this disorder to be able to chat with. it seems of late since leaving my wife of only 3 years, everyday is a struggle. very had to find the motivation to find a new job and im currently also finding it hard to find myself new housing as i am only on a low government income.

I have a just recently turnt 4 yr old daughter whom i regard as my everything. i have only seen her 3 times since i split up from my wife.

(1) Christmas Day.. 26th December
(2) Day before her Birthday 13th January
(3) Yesterday 30th January

I am trying to negotiate with my ex wife to see her more often. It hurts me more-so when i have to leave and my daughter doesn't want me leave and don't understand that "daddy no longer lives at home with mummy" i often find myself crying myself to sleep at night. ( when i do sleep )

Thank you for taking the time to read my story

Hello Kargroth

Welcome to Beyond Blue. It's good that you have found your way here to tell us your story. I hope we can give you some help and support.

Depression and loss are very hard to cope with, especially if you are on your own. I have not heard of DAD before. I imagine the difficulties are similar to general depression and certainly as hard to manage.

If you don't mind I would like to check a few things with you. This is so I don't give you information you already have. Were you diagnosed by a GP or psychologist? The reason I ask is that the GP can prescribe medication and I wonder if you are taking any anti-depressants. Depending on your illness, ADs can be quite helpful.

Also, are getting any professional help from a psychologist? Psychs can be very helpful and if you have a small income your GP can set up a mental health plan which will give you 10 free visits to a psych. Worth while chasing up if you are paying for treatment.

It is sad that you are not able to see your daughter. It is important of course that you settle on terms of access ASAP.

I suggest you explore the tabs at the top of this page. There is heaps of information about depression which BB will send to you on request, no charge. Look under The Facts and Resources. This information is reliable and accurate.

One of the worst things about depression is the way it de-motivates us. Everything seems so hard to do. We frequently feel tired and useless, lost and alone. Do you have any family and friends around who can support you? Having people who can listen without telling you to 'get your act together' or 'snap out of it' is really useful.

A skilled counselor can help get your life back on track. But you can also do things for yourself. Exercise has a positive effect on depression. Simple activities like going for a 20 minute walk every day will help to lift your mood. Have a good diet. Nothing special, but plenty of fruit, vegetables and meat. Lots of water and preferably no alcohol or smoking as these add to your depression.

Try to continue with activities that you enjoy and include socializing with friends. I often suggest that people try working for a volunteer organisation while looking for paid work. Not only does it keep you busy and gives you a reason to get up in the morning, but it also keeps you in the workforce. Being able to add this work to your resume shows prospective employers you are willing to work and are reliable. Sometime a paid job can come from volunteering.

Regards

Mary
