Hi all

I would like some feedback... I have been suffering with depression and anxiety over the last 3 years, recently however, I am feeling very very bored, so bored that my body hurts.  Can anyone please tell me if this is a symptom of depression? or is there something else is going on here??...

Don't apologise, it's not a silly question.

I can understand what you're saying.  I am suffering depression and anxiety and I find that I get bored very easily.  When I do things eg. around the house, I get bored very easily.  I even try to read a book but then get bored with that.

Not sure really why this happens.  

Do you have any hobbies or do you work? Even doing a bit of exercise like walking will help with depression.

there are no silly questions here.

I get bored too very easily. It was one of the causes of my drinking. Sad isn't it? Couldn't think of anything else to do so I got drunk.

I am no expert but I think it is part of the depression. The worse mine is the more bored I get. I think it has something to do with a lack of interest and motivation in anything. I am slowly getting better though and reading is something I can do again. I actually started by reading books about other people's struggles with addiction and depression. This seemed to help me.

Yoli your question is one of the best I have ever seen on the forum and I think it is very relevant to anyone that suffers from depression. I would submit that depression does cause boredom. It brings us down, it zaps our energy, it makes us lie in bed and hope that the world go,s away, if we,re lucky depression might give us a break now and again and we might muster the energy to go and do something positive but until we,ve battled and fought and spilled our guts on the therapist floor, depression will be there, wanting us to be bored.

3 years is a long time Yoli! Do you want depression to be an excuse for being bored? Are you going to fight depression until it gives you back your energy and zest for life?

for me I feel like my fight with depression is close to an ending. At the moment I,m just relaxing being lazy, posting on beyond blue, I,ve spilt my guts on the therapists floor depression is starting to give me back my life, but this time I have a new found respect for life.

if you find you,re bored Yoli try and find the strength to do something positive, anything positive. I,ll be walking on the beach with my family this weekend, I,m looking forward to a road trip over Xmas and new year. I think we,re going to enjoy this Xmas. Try and make some plans Yoli, take the fight to the depression. If you want to sit around and just relax do that too. But if the depression is making you do something negative such as drinking then that is a worry. Good luck Yoli.

dear Yoli, the reason we are bored is because we don't have any strength or motivation to do anything, we're not at all interested at all, and the reason is that we have a fear of failure, being rejected and not being able to cope.

We may have had a job previously, but then we get depression, so what is instilled into us is that any work or what ever we try and do will also fail.

We can also procrastinate and put off what can be done tomorrow, but tomorrow never comes, because we still manage to put it off again.

So boredom = procrastination = thoughts of failure = not caring = only want to sleep = can't be bothered = totally disinterested = depression, and you combine of these together which means that you need help to try and rectify them all. Geoff.
