ADHD & Depression / Anxiety

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with ADHD almost 12 months ago at the age of 44.  It was quite overwhelming to learn of this at such an age.  Knowing that I could have improved my mindset earlier on in life and not failed so much as a child/teen if this condition was picked up at an early age.  I have been prescribed medication for it and have been taking anti-depressant medication for many years.  for mild depression and anxiety.

Is anyone in the same position as I am and if so, how are you coping?

Best regards

In 2003 I was misdiagnosed with ADHD. I had a history of anxiety prior and a bit of a train wreck of a life. So from 2003 to 2009 I took meds for ADHD, tried around 12 from memory and none worked, thats because I didnt have the illness. I went to a psych and diagnosed with bipolar, depression and dysthymia, a low mood constant depression. Thankfully got on the right meds and never looked back. The mania in bipolar 2 can mirror mania in ADHD.

So, regardless lets talk about coping. Some people dont have an illness until their 70's like my friend, then his whole world collapsed whereas I've had physical issues also and his one illness isnt serious. So then you have those with cancer and I'm glad I havent had it.

At the end of the day, management is the key. With medication it gives you a chance to rein in your symptoms be they spending issues, rushing, accident prone, sexual issues and so on. It isnt and opportunity to become "normal" but it can make you become more tolerable for loved ones and more stable at say- work.

Once you become settled the mistake often seen here is to go off meds as they feel cured, big mistake. Psych advice on all that stuff.

So thats the run down I hope it helped. Repost anytime and have a merry xmas.
