Dear MK

I think I'd almost pay them to return to you!

I'm not sure you are missing htat much without Netflix etc. I used my son's setup to watch a horrible TV series called "13 Reasons". I did this so I"d know what people were talking about as it was a pretty confronting show.

Anyway my son gave me a subscription and I look though the offerings occasionally, but don't seem to see much that is appealing.

There's a lot to be said for radio series, they are designed for the mind to make up the locations.  I"m just about to finish 'Earth's Children' and will see if I can find 'Cormoran Strike', the series about a detective written by J.K.Rowling -a great change from Harry Potter.

I often get lucky at my local library, the only downside being stories and books are  not always downloads but actually on music CDs or DVDs, so it limits where I play them a bit.

Hello Croix

You are referring to 13 Reasons Why, the tv series, which also was a movie based on a book, right?

I remember hearing about 13 Reasons, which seemed to be possibly over-hyped, when it came out as a movie, so I was unsure about the quality of the film.

I was curiousabout the topic, given my own history, & think it could be something to help launch into a serious discussion with groups of teens & adults. I think it would be interesting to compare how people in various age groups would respond to it.

When I was a teenager, nothing was said about some many things theens were going through, & so it seems to me, even if it is a poorly made series, or even if what the 'Reasons are, & how they are discussed in the series, perspective, responses, even if people have contradictory views of w;hat is portrayed in the series, I think it is useful as a way into the topics presented in the series.

Indeed, maybe show the series to young groups & older groups, then have discussions about what they have seen. & then mix the groups & have more discussions.

What do you reckon?

Makes me wonder, from a distance of 50 years, how many reasons would I have given, had I imagined anyone might have asked. As it was, when I was asked it was in the context of being shamed & already knowing no-one was listening, so I only gave one answer: I did not want to live, which is not the same as wanting to die. For me it was because everywhere I looked life was unbearable, seemed it would be so, always, such was my thinking at the time. Considering what I was experiencing of the world & people around me, Glad to say, I don't blame myself for feeling so low & hopeless. I don't feel that way anymore. It would have been much better if only some one or two people, at least, had taken any interest in what had been going on for me - & to have persisted in finding out my other reasons why.

Dear MK~

There are many sensible movies (no, I'm not going ot mention them here as they may be taken out of context) that deal with the subject of suicide, however 13 Reasons is not one of them. If anything it encourages and glamorizes suicide and at the same time locks one out for the ordinary sources of help that one can turn to by ridiculing them.

There is one scene that is horrifying and frankly I think the series should be avoided. It came from the US and Everymind, the Australian Media watchdog, managed to get Netflix to tone it down to meet Australian standards in series 2 onward.

I quite agree that letting peple know about suicide, wiht questions, discussions, lived experience and not only recognition of the feelings, but also knowing what to do is something that sould be part of every curriculum. Unfortunatly it only happens here and there.

I also certainly agree that peple that can talk frankly with anyone in distress and show care, understanding and the way matters might be improve is a wonderful thing. Like you  I wish there had been people there for me at the time. Apart from the friendships I form (yes even with mischievous felines, sneaky skates etc) it is the reason I'm here

As for the reasons you or I might -or might not -have give, to some extent that depends on the person one is taling with.

Please accept this penguin 🐧 as a mark of esteem for you deep thoughts:)

No need to thank me, I've plenty.

oh, I will too, say '"hank you" for surplus penguins ... when I send them off to explore the world's icebergs, I am always pleased to see them again & to hear of their adventures.

I have often wondered how different my life might have been had i known  who to trust & talk to. Mind, I would have needed to know them for a few years before I would feel sure I could trust them. I've thought, there were a couple teachers I liked. If only I'd known them longer, I'd've begun to trust them enough to begin talking to them.

As a recent post I have read, & want to reply to, has reminded me, because of their own experience, my talking to anyone may have been the catalyst to even greater family disruption than how the perpertrators actions were disruptive to the structure of the family. I remember being afraid of what might happen if anyone found out.. I remember how i was made to feel I would be responsible for 'troub;e' if I did not keep silent.

I understand it's very common for victims to be further victimised in this way - blamed for 'breaking up the family' if they speak up. & how it's the child or children who were victims who are removed from the home, how parent/s are angry at eh child/children who were victimised, not the perpetrators.

It's so late. I need sleep. i don't want to neglect that post I saw, so I'll take note of it.It's a really painfully emotional post for me to answer, but I want to try. Not sure what I'll say, yet.

Thank you, Croix

I'm going to say more on my own thread, 'Introducing mmMekitty'.

Then I'll get a late lunch. (I've just realised how long it took me to write & edit my response to the post, 'Guiltrip from my parents'.

Dear mmMekitty~

I'm sorry, Croix, I didn't find a thread called 'serious injury from my parents'. When I put this title in the search, it didn't appear in the results. Can you give me a link, please?

I had a very enjoyable pastry (yeah, it is some 'comfort' food, pastry is), topped with broccoli, & a mix of finely grated potato & normally grated cheese. Next time I need to remember to make the baking paper wider so nothing sticks to the baking dish I used. It doesn't matter that the ends of the pastry stick up & out a bit, so long as youput a tray or foil underneath to catch any cheese that might drip over. During cooking, look for those dripped bits & remove & eat before they get burnt.

& yes, I had a little snooze later. It's the new meds to help with my legs.

thank you,

Hugzies

Dear MK~

It was not a thread, it was my reply to your "Guiltrip from my parents" which I ad-libed the title in an effort to say that the guilt-trips people feel in these circumstances are a result of injury and of course totally unjustified.

That sounds like a pretty serious late lunch, delicious sounding, and I'm glad you had the nap

Yeah, very late, very serious, & I used half a sheet of frozen puff pastry ... if you are at all seriously inclined to give it a go.

Thank you for your explanation & the link (though I actually think I can find my own thread, still ... frightening to think that one day I might not)

Hugzies & goodnight
