Dear MK~
You are right, it was what was needed. Actually it was a male psych nurse, which was quite a rarity back then. It was not just the books, it was the fact he went home and brought me those books of his own quite off his own bat. I was not even one of the patients he was tasked wiht looking after.
This act of quite unsolicited kindness had a huge effect, as did the humor in the books. It turned an impersonal ward and a thoroughly unpleasant experence into something much more tolerable
You conjure up an excellent image of a ski-jumping cat:)

Oh, Croix, that was something you were talking to ER about ... which I didn't remember... it was last Thursday ... I read last Thursday's post from you still don't remember if I read it at the time ...
But I got it now! How good it was that Psych Nurse gave you the books.
& I'm glad to bring some lightness your way, because otherwise the hammock wouldn't support you ... now there's n image to behold - walrus in a hammock, over a fireplace. It's one of those fishnet type ...
& thanks for the answer to "what's in it for the babelfish?" question. I'd forgotten that important detail. I did think they could have all the wax they could eat or make candles or sculptures from ... that's what I thought.
I am trying to do some exercise today, but I also wanted to sleep, too.
I am imagining , Croix, that you have whole library shelves dedicated to jokes & quotes. Other shelves are filled with those favourite funny books. I don't know if you would use the Dewy Decimal System, but I do know you know exactly where to find any line on any page of any of your great treasure of books & films. (Yes, I know you have films, & a film projector in there, too, & your own silver screen, personal popcorn machine, & drinks bar, beside that comfy chair Alistair Walrus (your alter-ego) reclines in ... in his smoking jacket ... gosh, I hope someone has treated it with fire retardant ...
Cheers, old Chap!

Dear MK and all~
Frankly it was the kindness and perception of that psych nurse that made all the difference, the ward was unpleasant and was not doing me any good at hte time. I also felt sorry for some of the other patients there, which made matters worse.
Being able ot lose myself in a fantasy world was a real boon. Amazing how sometimes medical science is not as effective as kindness. You can judge what a lasting effect that had on my as I'm still going on about it:)
I thought that was your hammock, it would take the weight of a LRK, but not a walrus, who is in any case happy snoozing on the floor or ice.
As for books and films, I have house-full (including the HHGTTG), always bought them, rarely got rid of them, mainly because the ones I choose I'll want to revisit in a few years time. If I happen ot see something streamed I like I'll see if I can find it second hand so it does not disappear. I managed to find J.K.Rowling's Cormoran Strike series that way
I suppose the best fire retardant for my smoking jacket is I do not smoke:)
Were you impressed wiht my comma placement ability?

Dear Croix and MK,
I couldn’t agree more about kindness being the key ingredient in healing. There is nothing better. A couple I knew worked in a hospital. They came across a baby whose mother could no longer care for him. He was very sick with major gastrointestinal issues. They decided to adopt him. Within a week his sickness had gone! Just having a home with adoptive parents who could care for him cured what the hospital could not.
A few years ago I visited a friend on a psych ward several times. I could see how it was an environment not conducive to getting well, as much as it is a safety net for people. So having a nurse like you did Croix was wonderful. I reflect on what a challenging job it must be and how phenomenal the staff are who give out that kindness amidst all the challenges of that environment.
At the moment I’m enjoying having a grey fluffy cat to look after. I think giving kindness is curative too. I enjoy getting her food and talking in a silly voice to her. She is another being to be kind to and I get so much out of that. You will be delighted to know MK that she did mega zoomies earlier this evening 🥰 That’s after a day of sleeping, resting, lying around and more sleeping. So is the life of a cat.

Dear ER~
Reminds me of Sumo cat who about once a week with throw dignity to the winds and pretend he is a kitten, zooming up and down the corridor. Then he comes back looking a little sheepish and resumes snoozing. I think all that stored up energy has to come out in a single burst.
ATM he is 'busy' in Mrs C's chair.
That was a lovely story about the baby, I wish there were more in the world like that adopting couple. you are right about a psych ward being a safty net, necessary even if often unpleasant despite the staff's efforts.

Very refreshing punctuation, Croix. I enjoy the little breaks, which is when I can get a drink of water or to catch my breath, while zooming ....
Even though I can't read printed books, I still like the idea of having shelves, in rooms, filled with books.
I'd happily share my hammock, Croix, with you, ER or anyone, individually or all together. I will gladly work on reinforcing the weave-work at once.
Yeah, the little babies... I remember working (volunteering, filling envelopes & files with forms etc), how they had 'Cuddle Mums', who were volunteers who gave the babies some special care & cuddles, when parents couldn't be there or needed a break. There was a waiting list of people wanting to do that work, but not everyone was suited to doing it.
Thank you both for happy descriptions of cat zoomies. & ER, for your baby story. I needed that tonight.
& Croix, I didn't say you were smoking - it's the jacket which is smoking ... which means you can't take that jacket into public buildings anymore, nor on buses, trains, boats (ferries), & planes, & automobiles (taxis) ... & not the shuttle nor onto the space station.... nor into submarines... yellow or whatever colour they are ... maybe you can take it surfing & water-skiing ...

* Smoking Jacket
When I open the door to the withdrawing room, expecting to find drawings within,
Imagine my surprise, finding what there is, is billowing smoke,
Not from cigar nor pipe, but from the solitary smoking jacket
& know my heart breaks, as I rubbed my stinging eyes on one unspoiled cuff.

Dear Broken-hearted MK
I'm afraid your sneaking into my withdrawing room has backfired.
In fact you stumbled into the set of the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Lodger, as story of the London Fog"
This was just being prepared especially for Monsterpeice Theater and I was just about to do the intro in my guise as Alistair Croix-Cookie. in wing-backed chair and smoking jacket (which was not really the source of the smoke)
Never mind, if you come next week you will find loads of sand as we will be featuring 'Dune'. Be careful not to get any of the set in your eyes!

The lodger has been dislodged & Alfred H & the producers & directors of Dune are not happy... because, when the smoke alarms went off, the sprinklers were also activated, & all the sand is now only fit for building sandcastles, with moats, which have actual water ...
But I am sorry about grabbing your sleeve like that.... If you just wear this cerise scrunchie around there, look, no one will notice where my claws tore the cuff at all...
