What medication has worked for you?

Hi all. Just wanted to post here and see if anyone has had any luck finding medication to manage anxiety and insomnia.

I am getting frustrated as I have been through 6 different medications this year and had absolutely no luck with any of them. Every drug I have tried has made the anxiety 100 times worse. Fatigued all day, headaches and numbness to list a few.

Just at a loss as to what to do. I am not taking any prescriptions any more and trying to exercise as much as possible but feel psychically weak when I do and having to battle through this brain fog everyday.

I am really chasing something to aid in sleep that doesn’t leave you groggy all day. Being tired makes my anxiety unbearable.

I would love to hear any success stories or advice. What’s worked for you?!?!

Hi Noz,

Welcome to our friendly online community! We're glad you decided to reach out here today. Our community has a wealth and variety of experience and can certainly share their stories with finding the right medication. We understand it can be an exhausting and frustrating experience trying to find the right treatment for you. Hopefully a few of our members will pop by to relate.

We would like to flag that our Member terms and community rules don't allow for naming prescription medications on the forums, so our community will be unable to share this information with you. If you are interested, you can find out the reasons why here -
https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/online-forums/treatments-health-professionals-and-therapies/why-we-don-39-t-allow-discussion-of-specific-medications-on-the-forums

We would strongly recommend that you work with your prescribing doctor to let them know the impacts the previous medications have had on you and together brainstorm what the next step might be. If you are unhappy with the service that your current prescribing doctor is providing, or you'd like a second opinion, our Support Service is available 24/7 by phone on 1300 22 4636 or on Webchat 3pm-12am AEST on our website: www.beyondblue.org.au/getsupport. One of our professional mental health counsellors at our Support Service will give you support and point you in the right direction for help in your area.

Welcome again, and we hope to see you around the forums. Please feel free to keep us updated here on your journey of finding what works for you.

Hi Noz,

I identify strongly with your experience and really empathise with the challenges your facing getting the right medication to support your recovery and sense of ease in the world. I'm also 'in the weeds' of sorting out what works for me but doesn't cause unbearable side effects - it's a really frustrating process that has taken such a long time.

Sophie rightly points out that discussion of specific medications in this forum is fraught with problems, but I also understand your need to find solutions to your anxiety and insomnia. I've lived with these concerns for most of my adult life, and I'm only now coming to understand that 1. management not cure is the goal, and 2. it's okay to have these conditions. Despite knowing intellectually that there is nothing 'bad' about me, I have internalised stigma around poor mental health/emotional sensitivity/ anxiety. The shift now needs to one from the heart.

So, even in the throes of distress, exhaustion and dread, the truth is you are a good person, worthy of care and your condition does not define you. I try to compare my attitude to my condition with my attitude towards a friend with chronic pain or cardiac issues. I wouldn't judge their suffering, need for support or use of medication. This is the same attitude I want to adopt towards myself. Friends and professionals have alluded to this 'mindset' shift over the years but I didn't 'hear' them because I couldn't get my head around the idea that I couldn't be cured of my condition. I have found others judge me much less than I judge myself.

So, communicate your experience and needs clearly with your doctor and as Sophie says, adopt a 'team' approach to your treatment. I think being proactive has been useful in my treatment and care - though not always foolproof! Second opinions are also useful if you are feeling misunderstood.

Wishing you well,

Annas

Hey,

I struggle with anxiety/waves of thoughts in bed/difficulty falling and staying asleep. It gets really frustrating! I also have some level of noise anxiety, so my partners breathing is enough to cause me to not sleep...

I’m currently prescribed an anti depressant that also helps with sleep. I don’t think I’m allowed to give any more detail than that sorry.. but I find it helps my mood, and also helps my body relax at bed time.

I’ve recently started listening to the ‘sleep’ program from the Smiling Mind app that beyond blue suggests- it’s helped me get to sleep usually within 6 minutes, instead of the normal 2 hours or so. The ocean one is my favorite. It’s basically breathing exercises. I find I can’t do it myself (get distracted) but the way these sessions are done, its like it knows my mind is wandering and draws my attention back!

If you haven’t already tried this,’This Way Up’ has a free insomnia kind of course that helps you understand more about it and things you can try, but if you’re like me you may have tried everything already.

Hi Noz,

I’m really scared of medication for Anxiety/Depression myself. I don’t know why.

I have ‘given in’ to medication to help me sleep. Even that has been a difficult journey of experimentation. Most don’t do anything at all. One or two knock me out for 2-3 hours but may involve me texting random people, seeing ‘party lights’, talking about lesson plans or divorce, or up about and trying to walk around then passing out! None of which I have any recall of.
I’ve been walking 15-25km per day without fail yet still sleep alludes me.
I completely feel your frustration, especially as it sounds like you’ve really tried everything. I hope you find something miraculous soon xx

Hello Noz...Annas1 BeADodo

I used to have bad panic attacks for many years until my legend GP mentioned the benefits of a small dose of antidepressants used in conjunction with frequent counselling. The meds on their own are never really a fix all. They do provide us with a strong foundation on which we can heal more effectively

Anxiety can leave us physically and mentally drained not to mention the reduced quality of our sleep

If we are experiencing a serious physiological issue/illness...we will be on meds to help us with broken bones or internal injuries/illness. Anxiety/Depression is no different when our mental health has a negative effect on our ability to function on a day to day basis whether at work or our personal lives

my kind thoughts....and good on everyone for speaking from the heart too!
