Overwhelmed at new job!

I have been working the last 2 years as a medical receptionist for a small business. Recently I decided that I couldn't survive any longer on part time pay and took a new job in the exact same field, just a different company.

To say this has put my old job in perspective is an understatement. My old boss started their business with no prior knowledge of the industry. It is clear that policies and procedures that should legally be put in place, have not been at my old job. Therefore at this new job I am feeling very overwhelmed. They are expecting me to know a lot of these policies and procedures for privacy and billing etc that I've never had to use before, as clearly my old work was doing some things a bit off-book. Also this new company does so many more extra steps and I'm feeling like I'll never remember all this info.

I'm slightly regretting the move even though its only my first week and I'm going to be better off money-wise. I know it will feel uncomfortable for a while as I don't really fit in and don't know the work but I'm wondering how long its going to take. I have given myself a coldsore from the stress, and when I get home from work, I can't stop going over what mistakes I may have made that day no matter how minimal it is.

All the staff have been lovely and helpful but I just feel so out of sorts and so uncomfortable not knowing my role!
My family keep telling me to stop overthinking because I obviously got the job for a reason, and I'm not expected to know everything straight away, but I put a lot of pressure on myself.

Congratulations on your new job..,It takes a lot of courage to go from part time to full time work.

I think that after a few weeks you will be more settled into your new role..it takes time and every company does things in their own way...once you understand what you new role entails and with the help of the other kind staff that you work with, who are helping you by showing you how to do things..You will be able to then enjoy your job..

I don’t think the other people you work with, will expect you to know everything and they seem to want to help you....

Your family are so very right..you were given the job because the person who hired you..saw that you will be an asset to the practise you are now working for.....and no unigirl your not expected to know everything straight away...

I know starting a new job can be stressful.... any new job is different because there is always something they do differently... you will learn what you need to know there just give yourself time 😊

Also try to focus on the positive things through out your day... greeting the patients, your mannerism, making some one smile..your helpfulness 😊

Hi Grandy and Petal, thank you so much for the time you took to reply to my post. I've just now completed my 4th week of my new job and I cant believe how much I was overreacting! I stressed myself so much the first two weeks over things that the other staff members didn't even care about! They are so helpful when teaching me and guiding me about their processes. They are very "no blame" and they immediately told me that if any patient or other person was rude to me, to immediate tell the practice manager and they would be spoken to. I feel a bit silly having overreacted as usual but that's anxiety for you! Thanks again, unigirl.
