new and anxious

Hi all, this is my first post and i dont really know where to begin. Im a 49yr old female that has suffered with major depression, chronic anxiety and agorophobia for 34 years. Agoraphobia has been an on and off thing. Im on meds and seeing a psychiatrist and psychologist. My anxiety has been spiralling out of control lately so was put on a different antidepressant and was quite sick but it subsided.then she wanted me to increase my dose then i got blurred vision. I stuck it out and after a very long 11days my vision came good. She wants me to increase a little more but iam too scared too. Ive had a really stressful few years. Looking after my elderly parents who unfortunately got to the stage where they had to both go into a nursing home. Then last year my beloved partner of 24yrs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the oncologist was very straightforward and said he didnt know if they could save him. I was devastated beyond belief. After nearly a year of chemo and a 10 hour operation the best news......they had got all the cancer! He has to go back in another month to have a ct scan and we are told that if its come back there is nothing they can do. Iam dreading this ct scan. Anyway ive rambled on enough for now. I have a few other issues i would like to talk about , maybe next time as this was pretty scary doing my first post!     Shenlee

Dear Shenlee

Welcome to the Beyond Blue community. It is brave of you to write in. The first time is a bit scary but you will become more comfortable as you go along.

We are all broken in some way and in need of healing. None of us have medical qualifications but we have individual and collective experience. This is a safe place to let out your fears and any other emotions as you are completely anonymous.

You have certainly had a rough time lately and I am sad to read of your partner's illness. Pancreatic cancer is a nasty disease to have. I hope the scans will show it has all gone.

It's hardly surprising that you are very anxious. I would be surprised if you were not. Still that does not help you much. I presume your psychs are aware of your situation and are helping with your anxiety. Do you have any strategies for reducing the anxiety? I do understand that it's not easy to do this, but if you can find a way it will help you let your body rest a little between jobs.

I can relate to being wary about AD increases, especially with the reactions you have had. As we know, some side effects are minor and transient, but your side effects are huge. I'm not sure I would have the courage to hold on for 11 days with blurred vision. And to be asked to increase the amount must be very worrying.

Did you find the change and/or increase beneficial at all? I mean after you had adjusted to the side effects. New medications often take up to six weeks to kick in and even increases can take up to several weeks. What I am getting at is your feeling on whether the ADs are helping more than your previous medication. It's one factor of your decision whether or not to have another increase in ADs.

My doctor increased my ADs before Christmas. I was really nervous as I had a poor reaction to them initially. I took the plunge and was pleasantly surprised both by the lack of side effects and by the increased feeling of well-being. So when she suggested raising the dose again I was happy to do so. And again, no side effects.

However, it was quite a difficult decision to make initially and I can relate to your hesitation. If you decide to go ahead with another increase perhaps having a contingency plan in case the increase causes problems. Perhaps an emergency contact number for the psychiatrist, a what to do if there is a problem, should you discontinue the higher dose or perhaps all the AD while things settle down. The psych should be able to guide on this.

I hope you can write in again.

Mary

Dear Mary. Thankyou for your reply. I do have strategies for my anxiety but sometimes when im overwhelmed they just go out the window. My new antidepressants have helped a bit with anxiety, which was the only reason i waited out the blurred vision. So im quite happy with them although it has only been 4 weeks. Now i can drive to the shops and go have a capuchino (decaf of course) things i could not do 6weeks ago. So im really chuffed! My pyschologist and i are working with CBT and she is excellent. I think most of my anxiety and depression is based on my health issues and chronic pain. I have just found out i have atery disease in my calves and have to have my blood flow checked via ultrasound, then i dont know what happens. Then in 2weeks i have to have a brain MRI for pulsating templ pain.arrrrgh its all so stressful. I have chronic sinus disease, arthritis in my neck and lower spine also. Im so glad to hear that your change in medication went well after being so nervous about it. Hope you are doing well and hoping to hear back from you. Lots of fuzzy hugs  Shenlee
