My Anxiety/Depression Follow Up - Help

Hi guys, about few months ago I went to get a diagnosis. The doctor told me I have depression and anxiety that has been ongoing and gotten worse now. He also made me a Medicare plan thing to see a phych.

When I had my first session with the psych. She was really nice though I felt she downplayed my condition abit as I told her many days I am unable to keep up with daily appointments and do activities as I cannot get out of bed and always locked up in a room.

Now during this hard COVID times my Centrelink job provider has been very rude and pushy even when I told them I cannot work. They told me to see a doctor.

I am able to see the doctor but I don’t know how to start the conversation on what I need. Could someone please help me on what I should bring up and what to ask the doctor for?

Thanks

Hi HateTheSystem,

First, I want to say well done for reaching out and for originally acknowledging a few months ago that things did not feel right and you went to get a diagnosis from your doctor. This first step is sometimes the most difficult to do, but it puts you on the right path to improving your mental health.

In terms of your psychologist, my recommendation is to see how the next session or two works. If you still feel she is downplaying your condition a bit, then it is OK for you to try and seek someone different that better understands what you are going through. When I have felt periods of anxiety, I went to three different psychologists before I found a person that I felt most comfortable.

When you see your doctor next, the best thing to do is just be honest. Explain to them that you have feelings of anxiety and depression, which is impacting on your ability to work. The doctor might do something like a mental health assessment. I understand that it might feel a bit intimidating knowing what you should or should not mention. May I ask what is the main hesitation (if any) in not knowing how to start the conversation?

You have done the right thing by your mental health by getting a diagnosis in the past, and when you feel ready I am sure you will be strong enough to discuss things with a doctor again. If discussing in person might feel intimidating to you, there are more readily available telehealth services due to Covid-19, which may make things more comfortable.

For your reference, there are some resources available besides these online forums if you ever need to chat to someone. Beyond Blue has an online chat function that is available 3pm-Midnight daily AEST and the 24/7 Beyond Blue hotline 1300 224636. The link is below for you:

I hope what I have written is helpful. Of course, if you have any questions or more thoughts please write back here as we are all here to help. Take care.
