I have been a ‘worrier’ since a little girl and have suffered from anxiety for most of my life. Throw in OCD with obtrusive thoughts and you have got one highly strung lady.
like everything in my life I have thrown everything at these conditions, medication, meditation, books, literature, psychology sessions, exercise, nutrition and more. The frustrating thing is I am still struggling.
To paint a picture I have a nice life I have a large extended family that is very close. Like most families we have our issues, health issues and personal, and different members are often frustrated with each other, this never lasts long and they move on. But I don’t, this close family is a big part of my identity and takes up a lot of the day to day activities in my life. I stress about the little cracks (no one else does) to the point I can’t sleep and I can’t function. I have a highly stressful job and I forever studying at University. I wake up at 3am and the worry starts immediately.
i guess I feel at a loss, all this effort and I am still in the same place I always am.
Any tips would be appreciated 🙂

Hi, welcome
I think you've come to the right place. I'm 68yo and up till 31yo I was a nervous wreck. highly sensitive and anxious. My teacher at high school nicknamed me the
worrier".
So, years in the Airforce, prison guard and minor law enforcement didnt help and at 31yo fell into conflict with my employer for fighting against mini corruption, favours for a politician. During one argument I got a huge pain in the chest and falsely diagnosed with heart attack. 3 months later they found it was a panic attack instead, but it was a shake up I needed to give up smoking and seek solutions some standard ones like what you mentioned and others that I introduced that were radical. Let me explain.
I noticed straight away that you listed some things you've tried, thats great, but also noticed you are still doing uni and a stressful job. Frankly two things that most likely will stop you from the momentum your anxiety has gathered all your life. I'd also add to your list things like a hobby (cant be a cheap as a jigsaw puzzle where you are distracted), regular holidays (even as little as a 2 man tent overnight in the bush with campfire and marshmallows) and sports/interests. Also removing toxic people from your life, anyone that revs you up or has high expectations or manipulation.
So, I have some threads I've written on these topics. Just read the first post ofeach and feedback if you feel like it in those threads or here. When I return to this forum I can see you've answered and I can respond.

Thank you, I will read through the links that you provided. Although I am still
working and studying, these things are my escape. I love my work and am a self confessed nerd.
My anxiety is not caused by the people around me, it comes from me. I am sure your tips will be very useful to me. Thank you again

The warmest of welcomes, especially at such an incredibly stressful time in your life. Sounds like you've managed to do a lot of work in the way of self understanding and self development. My hat goes off to you. It can be a tough business, self understanding, and one that never ceases as long as we're on this earth. Always something new to learn when it comes to gaining a better sense of who we naturally are and how we tick.
Who are we and how do we work or tick? My goodness, where to start? Considering there are experts or specialists in just about every area (neurologists, geneticists, psychologists, spiritualists, nutritionists and everything else ending in ists), to say we're pretty complex is an understatement. From physical, mental and even soulful explorations, it's quite the rabbit hole. As a 54yo gal, I love exploring that rabbit hole and all it's occasionally intersecting offshoots. It's a passion or interest born out of necessity, especially when it comes to managing my mental health.
One of the areas of exploration I enjoy most would have to be of a more natural or soulful kind. I think it's because it offers a perspective of power and ability, as opposed to a sense of powerlessness and fault. For example, someone could say to me, in a period of depression or anxiety, 'What's wrong with you? You're too sensitive (expressed as an insult)'. On the other hand, on a more positive note, someone else could say 'Gee, you're sensitive (meant as a compliment). You have an incredible ability to sense so much, including what's stressful and depressing. Has anyone ever taught you how to come to your senses in constructive ways that serve you?'. So, it's kind of like 'As an apprentice 'sensitive' or 'feeler' (of feelings), I've never had a master to show me how to master sensitivity/feeling, from a young age'. For some, it can be quite a number of decades of struggling without a master. So much to know. So many practices to trial, in finding what works. So many feelings to wake up to. So many challenges to face, learn from and develop through.
When you can sense/feel your tipping point, sense/feel where your cortisol levels, dopamine levels and nervous system are at, when you can sense/feel what people say to you, sense/feel their emotions (as though they were your own), sense/feel your inner dialogue, sense/feel certain facets that go toward making up the whole of who you are (with the stresser being just one of those facets) and when you can sense/feel just about everything else, technically that is one seriously impressive ability that can definitely feel more like hell on earth at times.

I took up yoga years ago to address my mental health - maybe give this a try. I would also suggest taking a break from your studies from time to time & simply meditate in the sun & fresh air. I know easier said than done. The other teachings that saved me some 20 years ago is Positive affirmations. Your mind is stronger than you think & sometimes it's about re-training your internal thoughts!
