Hi Dani,
I am sorry to hear you are struggling with feelings of anxiety and depression. It's a tough journey.
Having been through the process, I can share a little more information with you.
Initially, you get into contact with your GP (Probably via a phone appointment, given the current Covid issues).
You can then discuss how you have been feeling, for both depression and anxiety symptoms. You might get some questions about how long you have been feeling like this or whether you have experienced anything similar before. You are also likely to be asked about any suicidal thoughts or intentions, which can be confronting.
Your GP will guide you, and you are then likely to encounter a screening survey, perhaps a K-10 or a DAS-21. You can find these online if you would like to have a look first.
Once you have finished the survey, your score will be used to evaluate your symptoms, and you will likely be asked whether there is a particular therapist you might like to see. If you aren't familiar with anyone, give some thought to how you would feel discussing your feelings with another person, thinking about gender, age, cost and speciality. Discuss this with your GP. They can then write you a referral.
The referral is called a Mental Health Care Plan, and entitles you to 6 subsidised sessions with a Psychologist. This can be extended following the sixth appointment, after discussion and a new referral from your GP, for another 4 subsidised sessions.
Keep in mind, that Psychology is very personal, and no therapist is going to be offended if you aren't feeling a connection with them, and wish to see an alternative practitioner. They might have someone in mind, or your GP can find another clinic.
Of course, you can always supplement this process using Beyond Blue resources, or by accessing services such as Headspace (If you meet the age criterion, etc.).

Going to the GP and asking about the Mental Health Plan is not scary at all. They ask you those heavy questions but know they ask these questions of everyone. I've done it and still get my sessions renewed. Although currently I'm considering continuing on using my own funds as I need extra help (and meds). I'm struggling with the lockdown this time around.
Please do it for yourself as even if you're not in a bad place, it's quite nice to sit and talk with someone. And if times get tough, you'll have already got the ball rolling and have a point of contact.

I would like to warmly welcome you to the forums..
TackyTapir and LouB have both given great replies to your question....and are spot on with how the Dr..starts you on a mental health care plan...
It took me a few years before I got the courage to speak to my Dr...My anxiety stopped me...I thought that I could heal myself of my anxiety and depression..but I couldn’t and I continued to struggle more and more as the weeks were passing..
Once I did speak to my Dr...I have never looked backwards..it was the best thing I did for me..
Please Dani..Try hard not to be really anxious about talking to your Dr...Most Drs. are very understanding of depression and anxiety and want to help us to heal...
It was hard for me to make the initial visit...but it was the best thing I ever done to start my journey towards wellness..

Hi Dani,
All the above replies are great and give a good idea of what to expect when chatting to your GP and getting support from a psychologist.
It is confronting when you’re thinking about asking for help for the first time. I put it off for a long time because I was worried. But honestly I felt so relieved afterwards, a big relief to have my feelings and worries validated. It’s a brave thing to speak up and ask for help but I’m sure you won’t regret it, the healthcare professionals are there to support you through this, you don’t have to do it alone.

Welcome to the forums!
I broke down infront of a doctor a had never seen before (my regular doctor was away), She bluntly said to me that I needed help.
I booked an appointment with my regular doctor - broke down infront of her aswell.
We had a chat about it, we went through the process of filling out the questionnaire sheet (as mentioned above) and she gave me a mental health care plan and a referal to a psychologist.
It was the most liberating thing I have experienced. I feel no shame in crying and I have never looked back.
