Hi julzey,
Welcome to the forums. My own daughter had and still has this habit also. Of course it got worse in high stress times. She concentrated on pulling at back of her head, her fringe area and her eyebrows. I got her a fidget spinner and encouraged her to use it when she noticed pulling. It had mild benefits but she told me that sometimes she didn't realise she was pulling anyway.
Some counselling or therapy may be beneficial also. My own daughter didn't go down this road but may have to in the future.
Meanwhile, it could be helpful for you to read some of the discussions on these forums about this topic. Other members have had discussions about trichotillomania under the headings -
- Trichotillomania (hair pulling)
- Anxiety, OCD and hair pulling
-How do I manage my anxiety without pulling my hair out?
If you type these headings into the search bar they will come up and you can have a browse through other peoples experiences and opinions.
Best of luck julzey. I know how awful it is watching our children engage in this anxious habit. I know I felt a bit powerless seeing my daughter struggle with it for a while.
Kindest thoughts
CS

Hi julzey,
I was only diagnosed with trichotillomania as an adult.
what worked best for me was seeing a psychologist & undergoing CBT - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
this helped me work out when I was doing it, why I was doing it & steps to avoid/distract me from doing it.
it does still reappear now & then when I am stressed, but it’s definitely reduced.

Hi Julzey,
I feel your pain. I am 48 now and I have suffered with this since I was 12. There are coping mechanisms but anxiety can reign. Trich has been like a security blanket (albeit harmful and the opposite of security) which you resort back to in times of stress/anxiety/boredom.
I will do anything to help others avoid what I have been through over the years. Here to help.
