Extreme Social Anxiety

Hi Everyone,

I am struggling with extreme social anxiety and lack of motivation (almost agoraphobic).  I have just started a new job and everyone seems so confident and sure of themselves and I am finding it difficult to interact. I question everything I say or do and am really unsure of myself.  It has gotten to a point where I just want to hide away from the world. I suffer with severe back pain which I have seen a specialist about, however there is not a lot that can be done other than physio.  This doesn't help when trying to do exercise or activities that I know will assist me with the anxiety I am experiencing. Looking for any strategies to overcome this and assist with getting my confidence back.

Hi, welcome

Yeh, its tough and I'm glad you came here for some lived experienced advice.

Anxiety is a serious illness but unlike many others it is curable and I'm living proof of that. My anxiety peaked in 1987 after a work place incident triggered me and a panic attack was then diagnosed incorrectly as a heart attack. 12 months therapy followed and during that time I researched my illness and added many other changes to come up with a plan. It's all in the following thread 1st page. Lots of info there that will help.

I also had mania from bipolar diagnosed 2009, much later. That meant I had 90 jobs and 15 professions. So you talk about social anxiety at a new job, I felt it each time so I'm kind of thinking there is a normality factor in your nervousness at your new job and time will come with a more relaxed daily experience at work. In 6-8 weeks time you'll settle down and feel much more comfortable.

Coincidentally I suffered a back injury in 1990. I eventually had to seek a job that allowed for some back movement (eg walking) but not strain it. I moved from a labour job to a dog ranger and security guard. So physical disability can also lead one to seek changes for medium to long range planning. It's all a case of acceptance-

Sometimes we exacerbate our issues and it becomes worse. Worry about being introverted can be worse for your health than the social anxiety. We are all different and being quiet, not confident is ok.

I'm in the same boat with back pain. I have a woodworking hobby to help alleviate anxiety. But if I try to do too much, my back starts spasming and cramping, adding to the anxiety. It's a balancing act. I've heard pilates can be good, more gentle on your back.
