Anxious about quarantine

Hi all,

I’m flying to HK on 1 April. I’ll need to quarantine in a hotel for 21 days after my arrival. The double impact of having to leave friends and supporting circle and the long quarantine makes me very anxious. I fear a panic attack during my quarantine period. Could anyone offer some guidance?

Thank you!

Hi GaryX

Wow, I think you’re very brave to be travelling to Hong Kong during this pandemic. I’m not even ready to leave my state, such is my apprehension about possibly ending up in hotel quarantine. I think it’s great that you’re thinking ahead to safeguard your health.

If I were in your shoes, I would be spending my time now planning. A hotel-room based exercise program. Books to read. Music play lists to match different moods. A network of friends to contact via social media, with connection times planned in advance to reflect their different schedules.

Perhaps set up a number of online social events. Or organise to play Scrabble with friends online. Pack some kind of hobby activity that you enjoy, whether it be art supplies, writing journals, or a craft.

I’m wondering if you’ve had panic attacks before or if you’re worried this experience may trigger your first experience?

From my experience, breathing exercises and mindfulness may help in the moment. And remember that whatever you’re feeling will pass.

Having someone to talk to might also help get you through an attack. Is there someone from home who could be your support person? Maybe recruit a couple of people willing to take calls and help at all hours.

It might also help to find out what on-site supports will be available at the hotel and how to access them in advance. Talk to your GP before leaving about how to cope independently. Call the bb coronavirus support line to see if they can help.

I wish you safe travels and good luck with the isolation.

Kind thoughts to you

Thanks Summer Rose.

I’ll have a stationary bike and some resistance bands with me. Friends are supportive although I’m mindful not to occupy too much of their time since they all work full time.

I live on my own and I noticed that I feel anxious at night thinking about the upcoming quarantine. I don’t like the feeling of losing freedom. For example, I panic when trains are stuck in underground tunnel. 3 weeks are a long time. Hope I’ll be fine!

thanks again.
