Anxiety! How to get back on the bandwagon again?

Hi all

Anxiety is fairly new to me (I've had my new friend for approx 17 months)

I've managed to get it under control for the past eight months, the months before, I was concentrating on gettinf better.

A few stressful events over the last 5 months and now on holidays has seen my anxiety spike again!

I feel like all the positive and rewarding effort I put in over the last 17 months, I've lost faith in.... that they will not work anymore (eg. Positive thinking, taking natural products and just a general positive mindset)

I'm finding it quite difficult to pull myself back out of the cycle again.

Any suggestions out there?

Welcome and good on you for having the courage to post!

Having anxiety of any level is a crappy place to be in

My anxiety started in 1983 when I was 23 and there was little help or understanding available. It took 13 years of trying to self heal which (just for me) didnt work until I started frequent counseling

Irrespective of the degree of anxiety the first best step is to see your GP and yes they do have much better training than they used to have years ago.

Our anxiety levels can sometimes be 'free floating' as in they can come at any time without a trigger.

Can I ask if your anxiety is preventing you from studying or working?

You have tried so very hard and done well with being so proactive with the anxiety. That takes huge strength Jeck

If you have any symptoms like tight breathing....or having difficulty working/studying we may be able to assist you more effectively. Your GP would be the best bet as per what you have posted tonight

Thanks for sharing. From my experience anxiety never completely leaves us, but we can learn to live with it. It sounds like you have proven that over the past eight months. It makes sense that a few stressful events recently have triggered the anxiety off again. Don't be so hard on yourself, this is just temporary.

The efforts you have gone to sound great. Maybe you need something to distract you from your thoughts while you lift yourself back out of this phase. A few books, a hobby, exercise and cooking yummy meals are all good distracting methods. Alongside the other activities that have helped you already.

I agree with Paul, my GP is great and is always very pragmatic.

It took me about 2.5 years to get my anxiety under control and now it has been 14 months since I was in a really bad patch.

Thanks for replying to my post.

I'm still able to work 🙂 I'm very fortunate that my workplace allows me to work from home if I ever need it, however I haven't had to need it for the past 12 months 🙂

I think I just found myself in a "bad phase" as Blue Jane said.

I honestly think too that as I was having such a good run with anxiety that I found it hard when I don't have a good day/week etc.

I think though I'm finding more about what my triggers can be and I need to try and stop being so hard on myself! It's funny you know, everyone else can see what a fantastic job I've done over the last 8 months, however I was just seeing a failure with my bad phase! lol

I think I need to see the glass as half full rather than half empty! Haha

Hi Blue jane!

Unfortunately we've just recently moved, so I've had to leave my brilliant GP!

I'm yet to find one as good as her and have the relationship we did.

We've moved to a small country town in the NT. So that has been challenging (in more ways than one)

However I have great relationships with my Naturopath and Psychologist, which is also great.

I'm positive that I will achieve calmness again.

It's hard with GAD, when I'm bad, I'm scared of my own shadow lol

I have never been to the NT. I would find it mega challenging...you are a strong person...

Hi Jeck87

I visited Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs as teenager and it is a beautiful part of the world. Of course you are feeling anxious, sounds like it has been a big move. Really glad that you can see that everyone else has seen the progress you have made over the past eight months. Keep that top of mind!

Like blond guy states above, having a naturopath and psychologist already lined up is impressive. Can one of them recommend a GP?

Keep up the positive mindset, this is just a phase as you settle into your new hood.
