Anxiety from family

I find that family arguments, insults, disputes etc. triggers my anxiety to increase then plateau. After arguments or put downs, i feel anxious, on edge, sometimes angry and emotionally drained. Does anyone else feel this way too? Do family members cause anyone else an increase in anxiety?

Thankyou.

Hi, welcome

Family environment can dictate how our anxiety develops particularly if the toxicity was present in our childhood.

As we become adults we are more infibifual, we have our own limits, tolerance, health issues like triggers and needs like a calm atmosphere. If our family cannot satisfy such needs we must endeavor to make changes for our well being.

The changes you need to introduce drpends on many factor. Eg we cant expect others to change their personality or habits so our expectations should be pliable and limited.

So changes you'd like for others to meet is up to you. Where you can change is more doable for you.

You can put up some mental walls which essentially means limiting contact. Google this thread and read the first post

Then we can introduce protection measures gor new people entering our lives

In the meantime seek a visit to your GP for anxiety.

Good luck

Hello izzysmith19, I think what you're describing sound like understandable responses to being confronted. I know I can feel my anxiety rising whenever I am in a confrontation, and with family (depending on your relationship) this can be heightened too. You are certainly not alone in this. Are you worried about how things are going with your family at the moment? I hope you will psot more when ready.

I do get that sometimes. When it happens I find it most helpful to get out of the house and go for a walk by myself. If I can't get out of the house I go into my room and put some earphones in. There's some really good calming music you can find on youtube. I like to colour in or draw or read to distract myself.
