I can't talk to my parents. They simply don't understand. I would go to a GP, but I'm scared of my parents knowing and other people knowing. I've already spoken to my school councilor and it hasn't quite helped my condition.

Hello guys, i'm currently 15. I am really sad. My year has not gone very well, or should I say my life. Since I got into a select entry school, I have not only become very nostalgic, I have also felt hopeless, don't fit in and lonely. My parents are always making it worse, they just don't understand me. I always keep thinking about the past and hope I could go back in time. Sometimes I don't feel like getting out of bed or going to school. I've felt very dumb and idiotic numerous times and I've felt like giving up. I can't focus as much anymore, because I keep thinking of the past and I can get annoyed or irritated quite easily. To add, all these exams are coming and people are expecting a lot from me. At school, I don't know who to hang out with anymore. Please help me. What is happening to me?

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

It sounds as though you have a form of depression. It is difficult to tell online though. Seeing your GP is a good idea. The pressure you feel from your parents, from others, and from yourself, must be difficult. Try to talk to your parents about how you're feeling, and tell them you think you need some help. Right now, your parents will probably be your best means of support. If you have a school counsellor, you could have a chat to them. Even telling a trusted teacher that you are feeling overwhelmed could be helpful. You are not alone in this.

Best wishes,

SM

Hi Mate,

I admire how brave you are coming here and having a chat with us. That's really cool.

I wonder if you made a call to a GP and asked them if they are allowed to talk to your parents about what you talk about with them. That way you can be a bit more comfortable about your parents not finding out.

What do you think?

Hi there.

It's awful to feel like you're trapped with no options isn't it?

I've been seeing doctors and psychiatrists due mental health issues for the last 20 years. It's always been my understanding that there is a doctor/patient confidentiality protocol which means that whatever you tell a doctor remains confidential, unless the doctor considers you may be a risk to yourself or others.

However, as you are considered a minor (yes, I hated that word too when I was 15), I'm not sure if the doctor/patient confidentiality protocol applies in this situation.

Paul's suggestion is a good one, however, if you're still anxious about the confidentiality aspect, you could contact BeyondBlue - either by phone or email - and ask one of the professionals to clarify the situation for you. I'm quite certain they will be able to let you know if the doctor/patient confidentiality protocol applies to someone of your age and they may even be able to give you some additional help. Contact information is on the BeyondBlue homepage.

Best wishes

LH
