Okay so I'm a teenage boy in my final year of high school and suddenly out of nowhere I'm depressed.

Throughout my schooling I've been to a total of 7 different schools due to family reasons and as a result I don't have many friends.

At my latest school, a rumour is going around saying that I'm gay and as a result I'm ostracised by my peers.

I'm originally from NZ and I moved here when I was 5 before going back home when I was 8 and have been in Australia since I was 11.

I haven't told anyone about this because they just don't get it. I'm usually extremely witty with a great sense of humour and because of it people expect me to make them laugh when they're feeling down.

Although the rumour was eventually proved false the damage was already done and now I feel even more isolated than ever.

My manager at the cafe I work at for a part time job has noticed that I've been feeling particularly down and has asked me what's wrong but I seem to lie to him as I feel like I'd be burdening him.

I just feel like I'm alone in this fight brcause no one seems to care about me.

Hi!

You’re not alone :)
Your manager is probably genuinely concerned about your wellbeing, as I’m sure
your family are. As the rumour was proved false, try not to dwell on it. It can
help writing down your worries and thoughts when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
You could type instead, if it’s easier. Don’t worry about what it looks or sounds
like, or if the expression isn’t great. Just write in a free way to allow your
thoughts to be expressed. You can throw away the piece of paper or delete the
word doc afterwards. I’ve tried this, and found it to be helpful when my head
is teeming with thoughts that are undealt with.

Seeing your GP is a good idea. Talk to him/her about what you’re
experiencing - they can refer you to a psychologist if they feel it would benefit
you. Year 12 of high school can be quite stressful, so it’s important to take
care of yourself, and seek help if your wellbeing is in jeopardy.
Try to not react when inconsiderate people talk about the
old rumour or make you feel bad about yourself. If bullies don’t get a reaction
out of you, then they will most likely lose interest. Try to focus on your
schoolwork.

I’m studying at uni right now, and let me tell you, there are no “in”
groups or cliques. At uni, there are so many different people from many backgrounds
and from different age groups that there isn’t really such a thing as “normal.”
After high school, these bullies won’t be able to continue their petty rumours
in the same way. Remember this.

Talk to a family member about how you’re going this year-
try to open up to them. This could be a parent, a sibling, an uncle, a cousin...
If you have any friends outside of school, keep in contact with them. Ask your
teachers for help if you’re confused or worried about something at school. You’re
never alone. Trust me, there are always people who care. On this forum, for
example, people care and don’t judge. If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed you
can post again here, or ring the beyond blue helpline on 1300 22 4636.

Good luck with the rest of Year 12!
