Hi Stu-ie,

Thanks for posting and sharing your story. I too am sorry that you have split up with your girlfriend, and hope that in the future you will be able to find a caring and supportive friend.

For now, I too advise that you return to your Dr and discuss your medication and your health.

You could try eating small amounts of food through the day if that is possible. Even having a snack bar or some fruit handy would help you maintain your energy levels and help you through the day.

Have you tried calling any of the help phone lines to chat with someone person to person, that is also a good way to get more advice, help and understanding.

I wish you well on your journey and hope you are able to find solutions to your problems. Please let us know how you are travelling.

Cheers for now from Mrs. Dools

I'm 18 years old, I've been on antidepressants since I left school at 17, so about a year now. For a while I felt it was getting better, the meds were working. Now I'm not so sure.

In the last month or so my sleep patterns have gone crazy, i haven't eaten properly in about a week, and because of this Ive been sent home from work early almost every day (because I'm tired, sluggish etc). My girlfriend and I have broken up two days ago because i drag her down and it's all of a sudden getting worse.

I just don't really see the point in fighting anymore, Ive been on the meds for a year and it's getting worse. And this is the second time I've been on the meds, so even if I win this battle, I could be back on the meds in another year or two, hell even another month or two? This is a losing battle, and I just don't know how much longer I can fight.

Any suggestions or stories would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Stu-ie,

I can relate to how you feel. After Year 12 (and during too), I wasn't
myself. My OCD and general anxiety became a problem. I was diagnosed with OCD at 13, so it wasn't new to me. I also overate as a distraction and a coping mechanism.

Now that
you've been on the antidepressants for a year, you could ask your
doctor if the dose should be increased. Prior to the last month or so, did
something major happen in your life? I'm just thinking that an event or
situation could have triggered a relapse. This may not be the case though, but
it is worth considering.
Lack of sleep is so debilitating. I had insomnia a few years
ago, and sometimes I still don’t sleep properly. It’s much better now though,
as my anxiety is under control.

I suggest going back to your doctor and
explaining everything: poor sleep patterns, inadequate food intake, and anything
else that’s bothering you. Clearly your poor sleep and eating are greatly
affecting your life. If you think you are at risk of losing your job, you could
talk privately with your boss about your situation (you don’t have to
necessarily go into great detail). This way, your boss will understand that
your sluggishness is not your fault, and may cut back some of your shifts, if
this is needed for your health. It depends on your job position.

I’m sorry about your recent break-up. Right now though, it’s
best you focus on your own health. Getting yourself better is crucial. Depression
is curable, and can get better. Go to your doctor, and keep in touch with your
family and friends. If you live at home, that is great. Talk to your parents
about how you’re feeling. It’s worth it, as your parents can be a serious help
and support to you. Without my parents, I wouldn’t be happy and healthy right
now. For some people medication is long-term, and that’s okay. I have been on
the same antidepressants since I was 19 (I’m now almost 22).

Even though getting
better takes time, it is so worth it. I am so much happier now. You can do it
too 🙂

Best wishes,

SM
