Hi all. I'm currently 20 years old and I haven't had a job or a car license.

I really want to find a job because my family is unsupportive. My brother pretends to hit me and pokes his tongue at me every time when I walk pass him. My mother doesn't really want to be there for me. Plus things are bad because my mum decided to make an argument with our neighbour and the home life has been toxic. My brother keeps cursing the neighbour like every ten minutes and they both peer out the window. It's just really annoying and makes me feel sick.

My mum is really strict too. Like I haven't had a boyfriend or gone out past 7pm or had a sleepover or gone on holidays because of my mum. It just feels like for the rest of my life I'll probably still be living with my mum. I'll still live in the same city and I'll still end up being poor and not being able to meet ends meet.

Like I just want to form my own identity without my mother. She always scolds me and I never seem to do anything right. I want to study abroad. I want to be able to be myself.

Does anyone have any tips for me for finding a job? I should of started when I was younger but I didn't have confidence. I still don't have the confidence. Also I would like to get my car license but when I was driving for the first time, I was driving with my mum and crashed. My confidence is a bit scarred too.

Hello Continuousventer, and can I offer you a warm welcome to the forums.

I understand what you are saying and can I ask you a question or two if that's possible, so this discussion can continue.

As you are 20 years old are you receiving any Centrelink payments and if so, in Victoria there is:

The VicRoads L2P - Learner Driver Mentor Program assists learners under 21 years of age,
who do not have access to a supervising driver or a vehicle, to gain the driving experience
required to apply for a probationary licence.

There are job agencies in the town centre who will help you find a job.

If you can find a flat or a unit to rent then Centrelink will help pay your bond and 2 weeks rent in advance, and if you need help with moving costs or for rent in advance, you may be eligible for help from the Housing Establishment Fund or maybe you might have a friend who will rent with you.

Rent assistance is also available.

Some op shops will help you with some furniture you may need or there are hire shops for the white goods but please get back to us.

I don't reside in Victoria, but I do live in Western Australia and get centrelink payments.

I think I'll wait until I have more money to move out. I don't know how much money is enough to move out.

Thanks for your post.

It sounds like you're in a tough situation right now, and sorry that it's a bit toxic at home. What are you up to now, are you doing any study?

For what it's worth, when I was living at home I was afraid I'd never move out too. Things were very hard, and like you - I even had an accident in my car that made me not want to drive. So know that you're not alone in this and things can change.

You mentioned in your other post that you were getting CL payments - what sort of payment - Austudy/Newstart? and if you were to start applying for jobs, where would you like to work?

Currently, I'm studying occupational therapy at university.

Thank you for your story, romantic thi3f, it honestly means a lot. Hopefully, my predicament changes. I don't want to live my mum until I'm 30.

I think I get youth allowance. I would like to work somewhere in retail or hospitality or tutoring. I don't really mind.

Hello Continuousventer', studying occupational therapy, that's great and you ask 'how much is enough money', there is also a saying 'how long is a piece of string', I don't think there is an answer, but to move out is when you make that decision.

Can I ask what type of job you would like in retail or hospitality as the variety is enormous?

Thanks for your post. That's no worries at all!

Occupational therapy is a great field to study, and it's so broad with lots of different job opportunities! Certainly jobs will open once you finish your degree, but being in that field you can also get lots of entry type positions now if you like, such as assistants working with people with disabilities/mental illnesses.

Retail, hospitality and tutoring are also great, and there are so many of those sorts of jobs that are open to people with no work experience. I think it's just about having a look at what's out there and seeing what they require - looking specifically for things like 'entry level'.

The other thing you could think of is having a chat to the uni student support; they might have some more advice, options or guidance (especially about the costs of living away from home).

I think I understood that already because there will be bills, food costs etc. I don't think it is good for me to move out now..

I would like to be a retail assistant or a kitchen hand or waitress.

Yes it can be hard to find a job with no experience. You can get a friend to write a fake reference. Say you were a labourer or some simple job just to show you are hard worker and gunna give it a go. Look working at McDonalds may not be the most flatering of jobs but things like that are easier to get into and then you do that for a while youll learn so much and get bit of pay behind you, and move onto next job. Your first job may not be flatering but if it gets you to next you are winning.
