It' great to hear everyone' responses 🙂

I also enjoy writing handwritten letters and note cards. Yes it was someone else not the receipant who received the cake that thought it was weird. If it was a catch up in the evening and if I knew the person drank alcohol I would bring something like a bottle of wine. I do enjoy having a social etiquette, I particularly get annoyed that nowadays people will make party invites on FB and people don't click that they are unable to attend.

I feel like I'm too old fashioned for my generation. In an age where no one calls it' all texts and FB messages that get forgotten about. I was recently told how it was weird that I brought a cake to a friends house who had just moved in together I had thought they would offer tea or coffee and serve the cake instead they said they would have it for dessert the next night. I didn't mind but was sad as I had hoped we would have a sit down and a good old fashioned chat over a warm beverage. I was told it have been more normal to bring beer. I would love to hear what people do that others might consider old fashioned or out of date? As well as some great places to meet people that doesent involve clubs or online.

i think you'll find that people are averse to difference Lolue and they call it "weird" or "strange" as a way of coping with it

it's great that you brought a cake for someone and i think that's all that matters

some people are just a bit more old fashioned than others and i don't think that is a bad thing.. i personally like it because it's variety.

You should be proud of your actions 🙂

Lolue

Welcome to the forum and what a delightful post.

I suppose because I am oldish I see being old fashioned as being a compliment! Just because you do something different does not mean it is wrong. The funny thing is some of my friends my age think I am strange as I text, email and go on FB as most of them don't go online.

I agree with Ham solo, be proud of your actions.

Do you have an interest or hobby- that is a way to meet people through their organisations or sport or walking or cooking. ?

I like a world where someone makes a cake and shares it with friends over a cup of tea.

Hello lolu,

Welcome,

The day we were moving into our home around 7 years ago, the lovely lady across the road brought over on a tray, some homemade donuts, cups, pot of coffee, milk, sugar and ice blocks for our sons. I thought it was a lovely gesture, I sat down with her we talked and rested for a little while..

I also agree with Ham Solo and Quirky be proud of yourself and your warm actions.

I think it was wonderful to do what you done.

Hi Lolue,

I loved your post!

I think it's absolutely gorgeous that you brought a cake to your friends house. Such a shame they didn't serve it while you were there and said they'd eat it themselves the next day.

Reminds me once i went for dinner at someones house and took a bottle of wine, she said thanks, put it in the fridge to enjoy another day and served me a glass from her cask. Charming.

You asked what things others do that might be old fashioned.

I like to make homemade cards and send them to people on their birthdays.

I also like to take things I've grown in my garden to someone's house if I'm invited for dinner or whatever. Sometimes that might be some flowers, other times it might be a few bulbs of garlic, a cucumber and bag of tomatoes.

Stay you. Be a cake bringer rather than a bringer of beer. It's lovely.

Hi Lolou,

Welcome tot he community here. I like your idea of taking a cake to a friend's home and think they were rather rude in not offering you a hot drink to help enjoy the cake with them.

One of my nieces has always enjoyed the "older style" of doing things. When she comes to our home we use the metal serviette rings, cups and saucers and the fancy plates for afternoon tea.

She quite often has fancy afternoon teas or dinner parties inviting friends over where they all partake in her style of embracing a different age.

I agree with others, keep on being yourself, enjoy your own personality and stay true to your own nature.

Cheers from Dools

Dear Lolue~
You asked to hear what others are doing that might be
considered out of date, well as you can see I still use the honorific ‘Dear’ in
all my correspondence including posts - but then again I am old fashioned – can’t help it, born rather a long time ago.

You talked of texting and Facebook, they are part of a
changing society where more of peoples’ lives are on-line and by and large
there is less emphasis on community (yes I know many will argue with that statement).
I find as electronic and instant communications become more prevalent and take
a larger place in people’s lives that face to face street-type community life takes
a back step.

The protocols for the sort of visit you made are becoming
lost, and I suspect the recipients of your cake may not have known quite how to
respond. Did they say bring beer or was that the view of someone else you
discussed the matter with?

Actually bringing beer if I was the recipient would cause embarrassment
as it would be a presumption I drink. By and large cake (gluten, sugar and lactose
free of course 🙂 might be safer.

If I moved into a district I’d very much welcome the sort of
visit you made, I’m sure it was an effort, but a worth-while one. Please do not
be discouraged by once socially awkward household.

Meeting people is a little harder, particularly if one feels
shy or awkward in a social environment. Work, volunteering, education, interest
and service organizations spring to mind as do hobby and interest groups.

Hey Lolue,

Because I'm not on FB people always forget to invite me, so I'll get a rushed text at the last minute which i hate because i need leadup time to prepare for something social 😔.

So there's something else old fashioned: i don't do social media.

And i like to use cloth napkins every night at the dinner table like Dools' niece.

And if i want to watch a movie i go to the library and borrow a dvd and watch it on a dvd player 😰

Hi Lolou and Everyone,

I like to go to the library to borrow books and Dvds too.

Hand written cards and letters are wonderful.

We always have a tablecloth on the table and use serviettes, not cloth ones though! Maybe I will change that!

I like to post out thank you cards.

I have been known to hand out hand written invitations.

Etiquette is a dying art for some people I think.

Like Croix, I have been know to use "dear" quite a lot and still do so on my correspondence which I hand write.

I do enjoy social media as well. I love seeing photos of family and friends on Facebook, I email a dear friend who lives in Europe and do send text messages. That is as modern as I get.

Cheers all from Dools
