I am heart broken

Never had any kids in trouble until now.

My youngest son last night was refused bail and is now on remand in police cells waiting to be transferred to the MAP.

Next court date is in October

I cant stop crying its heart shattering.My son has mental health and I am concerned for his mental well being.

I really hope to help you. I understand fully.

It was 49 years ago that I commenced working in the notorious Pentridge jail in Melbourne as a prison officer. I was 21yo. Training included 6 months classroom then assignment. That also included prisoner psychology, first aid and treatment techniques etc

You being a parent - jail for your child needs real perspective because jail as shown on TV or even your perception of what it would be like can be distorted. For your son the day commences with a wake up bell at 8am, into the exercise yard, breakfast, medical reporting includes meds, back to the yard. After lunch can include visitations and dinner is around 3:30pm. Total out of cell time is about 7 1/2 hours only.

IMO his greatest risk is not potential violence against him, it's the spread of influence from other inmates that could influence his future upon release, to pursue a life of crime. So your focus could include talking about a life without crime and mentioning to him not to fall victim to a career in breaking the law. Apart from that regular and consistent support from family and positive mentions that you believe he will continue to make you proud is important. As for mental health prisoners in jails many have some mental health issue especially ADHD or bipolar as their actions are often extreme. I can comment on how well the care of mental health is nowadays.

Family members of a prisoner can suffer stigma, embarrassment, devastation and even anger, but this situation be he innocent of guilty is a period in his life whereby (believe it or not) could shape his future to lead him toward a crime free life or not mixing with the wrong people. Remain positive, your emotions is not unlike grieving for a broken marriage or the trauma of a death, he will have another opportunity to rebound into a young man you'll continue to be proud of. Try to keep it in perspective. He certainly has a loving mum.

He knows he made a mistake now but he has to deal with what's happening.

His court date is 7th October.

He is gonna plead guilty to breaching a ivo its his first time in trouble and i dont think my son will wanna ever go through this again.

Its gonna be a long 7 days .
