My 21yr old daughter was in phsyc unit last year for anxiety, she has been fine but recently I'm seeing the signs again and I've tried to talk it through with her but she is getting really agitated and saying just give me my space . Don't know what to do?

Advice for daughter

Hi,

I have experienced anxiety since I was in my early teens. I am now 22, and I'm studying psychology. It's great that you are so supportive of your daughter, and are aware of the signs which could indicate a relapse of her condition. You could talk to your GP about your concerns for your daughter - they can give you tips on how to handle the situation. There are also fact sheets and resources on Beyond blue about how to support people with anxiety.

It's also important to ask yourself some questions:

How long have you noticed these re-emerging symptoms for?

Is there anything in your daughter's life which is causing extra stress?

Is your daughter socialising and still spending time with friends?

Has she got a routine? So, is she studying, working, or volunteering? Sometimes, when people don't have something to focus on or aim towards, they can become bored and frustrated, which can lead to overthinking, and then can start the cycle of anxiety again. Having too much free time can be just as problematic as having too many commitments. I have learned this through personal experience.

I hope something I said has been useful.

Best wishes,

SM
